    Decal setting solution

Just wondering if anyone knows what decal setting solution is made of?

    Do you bother using it?

If you are talking about a fixative and use an ink jet printer then yes. I have used Testors with good results. You could probably use a clear lacquer as long as the first coat was fairly dry and your final clear was compatible.

Not a fixative but it is supposed to make the decal look like it is painted on and no bubbles showing.

Ok I got it - Micro-Mark has a product for this commonly used in model railroading. Give me a bit and I will find it.

Edit: here is the link ...

I know about several similar products just never used them and was wondering if it is some sort of common product I might already have.

Jim I use woolite in the shop. (there are dedicated substraits but I dont spend the money on it) Half a cap mixed with a 2 pint spray bottle. Spray the surface down untill it pools and the media is easy to glide around. Set it in the center and work it out to the ends. I'm able to lay 96x11 inch pannels with out so much as a single bubble. Also remember vinyl is pouris. if you have trapped air put it out in the sun and it will escape out of the media. You can carfully walk wollite bubbles out also. NEVER pop them.
You can always pm me and ill give ya my number for additional info.

Understand that for vinyl but I have a few waterslide decals items that could not be done in vinyl. That is what the setting solution was for.

The type that used to come in the old revel and monigram model kits? If so the same thing will work with just a longer drying time. Fyi with a high enough resolution digital image that graphic can be printed in process on clear receptive .

fully aware of that but the guy I had do the graphics could not do that at the time. But if you get the Laser decal paper they turn out really nice and don't bleed like the ink jet ones do.

Thats exactly what I do. I don't work in ink. The colors are foils and allow for far more detail when reduced in size. There are limits. Outlines and shapes with detail under .015 of an inch will break up some of the time.

                      Jim,

I have used decal set with waterslide decals and it works great. At first the decal appears to "craze" and get full of wrinkles, but as it dries, the clear portion of the decal seems to vanish leaving just the image. Cool stuff! Recommended by Dr. Jet.

I think any good hobby shop that sells plastic model kits and/or model railroad stuff will have the decal set solution. No clue what's it made of though! If you find out, let me know because I do laser water slide decals too!
