    Prop Placement

    Hi all,
Currently working on a dual rudder setup for my BJ26. If you are interested please go here...

Anyhow, I'm trying to figure out where the prop should be placed in relation to the rudders. Right between them, in front of them (closer to the transom) or behind them. What is the advantage to each scenario? Right now my design is putting it smack in the middle between them, and I'm not sure if that will have a negative effect.

    thanks.

        Too big swim suit...

As far as I know the prop should be in the center of the rudders and the drive dog in line with the rudders fwd edge or fwd of their fwd edge. (closer to transom). I have not tried dual rudders.

I would stick my rudder in her......oops, boat question right? LOL
Now don't forget that I'm new to the FE world, but logical physics would tell me, to place the rudders as far back from the rear of the boat so the turn in at high speeds is more controllable, and to place the prop(s) to the inside of the rudders and flush with their trailing edge so the rudders dig into the most amount of water, giving the boat a crisp turn in.

Logically it would move more water. If there were a rudder out there with twice the width I'd just use that. But mainly I'd use 2 rudders because I think it looks cooler than an off set one.

Oh ok if it's just for looks no need to really worry about prop placement just put it where it looks good

most people put the prop at 10% of the hull lengh away from transom (i.e 70mm if the hull is 700mm long), but some put it closer, place the rudders according to what Disar said above leading edge in line with drive dog, remember if you put the rudder too far from transom it will be more efficient, may be too much efficient so that the boat could be uncontrolable!

cool. thanks for all the answers.

I'm doing dual rudder for a few of reasons....

                        1) to be different. it will look pretty sweet when it's done
                        2) maybe it will help the boat turn better
                        3) don't really like the offset rudder idea
                        4) if I go with an inline rudder, I don't want it to be too long like the fuller's setup

I don't race or anything like that. I just go out and beat the snot out of the boat, and hope it comes home in one piece. LOL!

When your doing the mods lets see the before, during, and after pics of the work.

When my parts from OSE come in I'll post pics of my triple rudder single prop setup. Just like you I just beat on my BJ26 bl and I want to be different as well. These are some of the mods I'm doing to mine.

What are you trying to achieve with a triple rudder configuration
