The Barracuda that Chop built.

Okay you guys, another scale build…

The boat is a Barracuda by Dare Designs and designed by Pat Tritle. I once again purchased it from M.A.C.K. Products. I intend to use the recommended power package of: # 5045 brushed motor (12v, 4.9 amp/hour draw @ 11,900 RPM's ) and Pro Boat “Riptide” speed control.

The parts are all laser cut, very clean! I have never built a hull and this will shorten the learning curve.

The skelaton is done and ready to be skinned.

A little fine tuning on the hull and the strakes can be added. Lots of careful measuring required here.

After adding the strakes, I made a sanding block to assist in keeping them parallel.

While waiting for putty to dry, I built the rudder.

Planking

Hi,

would it be possible to add mahogany planks to the outer skin?

if so, what size planks ? 3/8" maybe ?

I believe that the planks are 3/8" x 1/16." I won't be home until Nov. 11 and will verify when I get back. The ones with the kit are made of balsa and stained. I don't see why you couldn't use mahogany planks (it would add a realistic touch).

I haven't made much progress lately, I have been working on too many "home improvement" projects. I am anxious to get back to this project and get it completed.

Back to work!

FINALLY back to work on some boat projects.

I got as far as getting ready to install the drive train, but things seemed out of alignment. Two thoughts come to mind:
1) the strut is indeed crooked or
2) it is supposed to be that way to counter the rotation of the prop/motor.

What is the general consensus?

The subdeck is on and the deck is planked.

Hmm, never saw that question.

Not sure what you are talking about on the strut. Is the bearing part not inline (square) to the four screws? Pic as at a bit of an angle and it is difficult to see.

If the shaft is straight, install the strut so it does not bend the shaft and you should be good. Maybe the strut got bent a bit or the casting is off some.

Build is looking good.

Finishing

Well, the build is coming along. Many, MANY coats of varnish and sanding.

Wow, the finish on that is great. When wood is varnished properly there's simply nothing better; good job!!
