    new hardware finally coming together

Ok, so I'm finally getting all the stuff together for doing the dual rudder swap. Here are some pics, along with descriptions. I will update this as I make more progress.

this is the original strut I bought here from a member.

Here's what it looks like now, LOL! I'm still not done with it.

This is the bracket I made for the strut. I didn't wanna drill new holes, so I made one to fit in the stock mounting holes. And yes, that is a see through hatch cover. Will help me keep an eye on lipo monitors.

This is the copper adapter I made for the flex cable and 3/16" shaft. Copper is a pain in the ass to machine, but it turned out great.

And finally, this is the BJ26 SS rudder (2 sets). I must say, I was VERY disappointed in the quality. The machining is pretty bad, and they do a piss poor job of annodizing it. I redrilled and tapped holes to M3, and made all clearance mounting holes M4's. I reworked the poorly machined areas, and sandblasted the red off. They are significantly better now. I will be polishing them.

that's it for now. In the next week or so I should be finishing this up. I will be running on 2s lipos (4s) and an octura X642.

thanks. I'm bored at work, so I actually took the time to draw all the components in solid works. Here's what it will look like. It's missing some components still. I am getting it all annodized blue.

Got some more drawn up. The design is pretty well done. My parts are going to the annodizer at the end of next week, so shortly after that I will be finishing this.

I had to put a spacer for the strut bracket because I made it too short, and I would have to remove too much of the stock stuffing tube. With the spacer in place, I have to remove 20mm of the stuffing tube. If it turns out to be too much, I will have to extend the spacer. The prop shaft will obviously be trimmed as well.

one more quick question for the guys who know what they are doing, LOL!

Do my rudders look like they are at the right level? The hull in the picture is to scale for reference. I'm just worried about too much/not enough rudder in the water. That, and before the boat jumps on plane, looks like the top of the rudders will be submerged. Or I might be way off.

Kookie, are you going with a single servo?

I actually made the hatch myself. Just took the stock one, cut the rear section out of it (just behind the cabins) and resined in a plexi plate. The with epoxy, I sealed all around the perimeter.

And yes, it will be single servo. I will be swapping the stock one out for my bluebird high torque one, and tying the 2 rudders with a tie rod.

any chance I can get this moved to the building section? I know it's not a scratch build or anything, but others may wanna see the progress as well.

                    cheers.

so I have it all done, with the exception of the tie rod to join the 2 rudders. After sandblasting the red off, I had to repolish the surface so the new blue annodize will look better. It'll be going for annodize this coming week, since I missed my last window.

This is mounted on a plate just so I see how it all looks together. Personally, I think it looks pretty sweet.

ok, so I made some progress today....my annodizer screwed me a bit, so it's all staying raw aluminum for now.

here is the drilling template for the rudders...

holes drilled...the stock steering connector hole was filled with resin

                          one rudder mounted...

                          both rudders mounted...

strut bracket and strut mounted. the tie rod for the rudders is a little short, so I gotta make another one. I also opted not to use the bushing I made. Instead, I made a brass insert for the strut. saves having to spin the bushing.

cooling connected. I am thinking of leaving the other one open, and shoot a mean rooster tail out of it, lol.

That's it. Waiting for the flex shaft/prop shaft (should be here today) and the prop. Gonna tub test it to see how it sits. I'm thinking I have the rudders a little low. We'll see. Anyhow, hope you like.

You can do what you like but I would suggest taking the stock " turn fins " off. On mine I have Fullers Inline cat HW and it turns much better than with the fins on. On your setup I would believe the dual rudders should provide more than enough stablilty. Just my advice. BTY great job on the HW it all looks great, so let us know how it functions.

I'm gonna try with and without the fins to see what's better. When I make it out to the pond I will post a video. Won't be for a couple weeks, still waiting on the prop
