DIY Mini Mono

Hi fellow RC boaters,

I share my latest project with you: a 20" Mini Mono, based on John Finch Wildthing. I redesigned the hull, with slightly bigger V at the bow, and a different bulkhead design.

It is an easy build, perfect for entry-level boaters. Even better: it's a budget build too. For about $250,- RTR with lipo and charger, or below $200,- if you already have a transmitter and charger.

The bulkheads are 2.5-3mm thick plywood. The plating is 1.0mm birch plywood.



The motor I used is a 28mm 2600kV inrunner. The esc is a ZTW 50A water cooled version. A cheap mini servo and rudder with water cooling pickup, takes care of the cornering



I'm using 3S and 4S 3000mAh lipo's. The turn fins and trim tabs I made myself, but cheap alternatives are available (see drawing).



Ready to run! Including the lipo, it weighs just 873grams.

The first run, I used a 32mm prop on 3S. This boat runs awesome! The speed is 30mph and it's very stable.
Next run, I switch to a 36mm prop. It handles even better! 33mph, and it can take the corners at full speed.




Last weekend I ran it together with my 2 sons. It was a blast! On 4S, it reached a top speed of 50mph.

Thanks guys! I'm enjoying this Mini Mono so much that I'm making a second one. This time, I'm making it from carbon fibre. 2 layers of 200gr/m2 pressed together, with laminating epoxy.




This week, I ran the wooden Mini Mono with my son, and I got a PB with 52.5mph (84km/h).

Thanks! I made some progress on the carbon Mini Mono. I made the motor mount and lipo tray, both carbon fiber of course [emoji41]

Hi Dirk thank you for sharing your plan i decided to build one using some old parts I had around. The boat came out weighing 771g ready to run with a 2200mah 3s lipo I had. Hopefully I will get to run it in a couple of days.

Hi Jack, Wow your Mini Mono looks awesome! Great job on the build. It looks like you have quite some DIY hardware on it, such as the stinger and trim tabs. Let us know how she runs!

I made some progress on the carbon Mini Mono: I finished the rudder system.

Had the boat out today and for its first run I?d say it?s a fun boat to drive. Running a small hobby king out runner and a old turnigy 3s 2200mah lipo and x435 I hit 35 mph.

Awesome result, Jack! Thank you for sharing the pictures. I think a 2200mAh lipo is better than my 3000mAh lipo, weight wise.

Last weekend I ran the Mini Mono and Mini Hydro.

The Mini Hydro has a very similar setup: 3S, 3900kV, 31mm prop, 60A esc

Mini Mono: 3S, 3450kV, 36mm prop, 60A esc

The Hydro corners faster (as expected). The top speed is just 1km/h difference! Both boats are a lot of fun!

I finished the carbon rudder mount, and I made a new carbon hatch from 2 layers of 200gr/m2 carbon weave.

It's almost ready for the maiden run!
