48” Aeromarine Challenger T Mono Yoskimmity Clam

So, this hull was given to me by a club member at a prodomintley gas pond. Thanks again bro! Anyways, wasn’t planning on building this big. So I looked at it for a few weeks, read a lot.

Thanks Jessie j, f.a.r.m.e.r, scorpion and pry a few on rcg. First thing I looked for was how am I gonna power this with the least amount of money. T mono is not a big class, however, the twin gassers at the pond run every Sunday. So, I read and came up with castle 2028 780kv on 10s. Great, there’s one in my 1/5 buggy that is too fast to run in front of the house now. Next was esc. Went with flier 300. Cheap and good reviews. Batteries next I had 2 6s 5000mah 60/120c that were about to become useless. They may have 10 cycles on them. Also, had some 4s, same thing as 6 cells. Cool, 10s 10,000mah, I’m good. At this point, all I got money in is esc and ready to start building.
It had stringers in it and building my cyber storm, I’d rather put a carbon fiber lay-up in. Also, I got ose mount that can go either way. Stringers were glasses in with tape underneath. Got utility knife, started cutting. Got the dremel out for some of it, then got the stringers rocking back and forth until the broke loose. Used dremel and sandpaper to clean up the rest of the epoxy/resin still on the boat.

After that was done. Got the carbon fiber/Kevlar mat out and started fitting. I like and use the west systems 105 top coat resin. This lay-up was my first this big, 22”x36”. Started By the transom in the middle and worked the right side down. I’m using fast hardener so I did this in 2 sessions. Left it lay on its side so I wouldn’t puddle in the center. Then, I flipped over on left side and did that in 2 sessions. Let all of it sit a day, then applied light second coat in 1 session. Got all this done while motor mount, hardware, esc,and cooling can was being shipped.

The hull was already drilled for speedmaster. It was done for strut but I like the look of a stinger. My friend Ken haines helped me out on the rudder. I called Rossi and ordered the rest of it. Turn fins are OSE. Started getting all that mounted. Had to fill a few holes, drilled some new holes. I’m not sure about 6” standoff on rudder, May have to change later. I’ll try it first, rudder sits 2” behind prop. Trying to keep the cost down.

Got all that done and now attack motor mount, stuffing tube and mount. .250 cable, used 5/16 stuffing tube.

Got all that attached with 30 minute epoxy. Then started in on battery trays. I got a piece of 1” graphite flat stock and cut as long as battery trays. I glued it vertically to the bow line inside the hull. Then epoxied another piece horizontally on top of that for battery trays to level out and sit on. I had some left over so I cut pieces to go in between Velcro straps. Figured more area to epoxy down and my straps can be replaced if needed.

Here’s how I connected the trays.
      73B4BBC1-53BC-4AEF-BD0E-A1213E5F736F.jpg

Turned out really nice. Got my straps in and I’ll lay some sticky back down on the top of the trays.

Next was steering. Had 2 types of mounts that I got from ose, wanted to use one of them. I then went servo shopping. Ended up with a hitec hs-7955tg. Planning on running on 6v it has over 300 oz/in of torque. I know it work for tail feathers on giant scale 3d planes, outta move a rudder no problem. I decided to go with the OSE transom mount. I used one of the bolts for rudder to hold it to transom. I used to fly, the lighter the better in my book. I had some Dubro heim joints laying around so I used those with some stainless 6-32 all thread for my linkage. Think I may get some graphite tube to go over it with to stiffen.

Did some more reading yesterday. Prop size for this. I see a Octura 457/3 is popular on most builds I read. Problem is 3/16 hole and currently I got 1/4” shaft on the boat. Think steve may get an order today for step down cable. Really don’t wanna cook this. Getting up in price on props and was really only planning on p and q classes.
Anyways, see something wrong, rudder stand-off issues, whatever, speak up. I do appreciate all the threads that helped me a lot, you guys rock.

Great job. I’ll be curious how it handle with the rudder that far back. I’ve done it on cats but all my minis so far have been beside the the prop’ish. I’d certainly try it the way it is. Slower gentler corners should be the result.

Thank you. Ya, I’m gonna try it. Kinda reminds me of wheelbase and I’m thinking the same thing, more stabil.

Got esc today and it brings me back to the rudder. Now I’m wanting dual feeds on rudder. Whoever’s got boat this big, are you running single or dual pick up?

I would think a single would suffice but if you have a dual feed rudder go that way.

Got alittle time today wit the challenger. Speed control keep shutting down. I didn’t have programmer with me to see if lvc was on auto, 10s or 12s. Think it’s whats shutting it down. Anyways here’s a little video.

Perhaps it is set for 12s, then it reads not enough voltage under acceleration, cuts it and reads enough voltage, and over and over.

                    Looks good though.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. As soon as it pulls top edge of voltage, bam...done. I let it sit twice for a min, fired back up. Thanks too. New boat woes...lol
