    WT Find Square drive parts?

I was thinking of possibly doing square drive on my ML RSX 310 Rigger to keep the drive as free as possible.

I wanted to use .150" cable if possible but I don't know where to get the parts.

Brian B. and a few others do drive lines like this so they and others should know.

The motor couplers for square drive are available in .150" from OB tunnel drive parts but where to find a stub shaft with a square .150" hole? are there ferrules that fit .150 cable for soldering or Loctite?

    Thrust bearings?

Is it worth all the trouble?

    Help

There is a guy out west named Bob Tuttle that can get you what you need for a square/square set up. He can be found on Intlwaters as namba276. It’s what I have been running on my P-Limited sport Hydro for awhile now.

Nice, thanks. Do you tear it down for cleaning and re-lube after every run? I'll check out Intlwaters. Been a looong time since I've been in there.

Ray, that Performance Products has square drive gear.
Brian posted it in another thread that you had asked about.

No.. The strut in the picture has lead Teflon bushings pressed in the strut and Teflon washers on either end. As long as your running in the water, I don't see any reason for lube on the stub. You still need to grease/lube the flexshaft though. This system is a little different than what Brian uses from what I recall. In my system the flex shaft is squared on BOTH ends and is a completely floating system (flex shaft). The ferrule in my system is broached (or squared) just like the motor collet.

I am pretty sure that Brian is using solder on ferrules and permanently joining the flex shaft and ferrules with only one end of the flex shaft squared.

I was hopping this system would remove some of the load on the motor/motor bearings, but didn't see any significant decreases in heat. One large downside to this system is YOU WILL get water into the boat via the stuffing tube. Prior to this system, my hull didn't get any water inside of the hull.

              Later,
              Mike

Some good points to consider. Thank you very much Mike.

I prefer dry boats so maybe I will sit on this a while.

                    Thanks for all the responses.

Randy, when I'm ready I'll PM you for his contact info, thanks.

I've been talking about doing this for years, but never got around to it. I wanted to put the thrust on the strut and avoid the side loading of the flexshaft. Thought was that the overall system would have less friction.

Maybe I'm not understanding the photo correctly, but why is the thrust bearing on the back side of the strut? I was going to put it between the prop hub and the strut (where the white teflon bushing is).

When I assembled for the picture; it was done incorrectly. The way I have been running it on the boat the thrust bearing stack is on the other end.
