Motor suggestions for resurrected Campbell LSH

So I've been away from the sport for nearly a decade. I built a Campbell hydro for LSH about the time LiPos hit the scene. I ran the boat a couple of times in LSH configuration and it was OK. There was discussion at the time of re-working the class to use the SuperVee 27 motor with LiPos, so I re-configured the the boat that way. It would do 42 mph with a modded X642 prop without breaking a sweat. At those speeds, the handling was a dream with no indication of ever wanting to get squirrely or blow over.

I've decided to get this boat on the water again, using the same 4S battery configuration, but maybe a better motor. I've been friends with Steve Neu for somewhere around 45 years, but even at his "Close Personal Friend" discount, they're still pricey.

I've been looking at the OSE Raider 3660. It's Steve's design and specs, built overseas. What is the general consensus on this motor? The SV27 motor was somewhere around 1800Kv as I recall, so I would probably go with the 2030 Kv wind and maybe drop the prop down to an X640 to start.

    Opinions?

See photos of the first and second setups.

Hi Dr Jet, I remember meeting you at the LA SAWs years ago. The original SV27 motor was a 1500 Kv motor and a similar motor would work on that hull. I haven’t run the Raider motors but expect them to perform very well. The 1700 Kv version would work great for your application, see the following.

My old club ran similar-sized hulls (22”-25”) on 2S with a 3500 Kv motor on 2S. With an x440 prop speeds were mid-40s and they worked great. Lots of options.

The old blue SV motor was 1700kv.

I've been racing Steve's motor all summer in offshore. Think its 1750. Pretty solid. Love my Raider ESC too. Placed 2nd on the season. My son ran the 2030 but tried to run the same prop that we were running on a 1950. Baked it. I would think with 42mm props you would be fine.

Those Campbell boats were so fast in the day. I'm not sure how happy it would be going a ton faster though.

Thanks guys. Thanks for getting my fading memory right on the blue SV27 Kv. As you can see, I did a LOT of work on the sponsons, and the non-trips are crisp and flat as well. With the blue SV motor, it really is rock-solid and I can corner at full speed and full rudder. Maybe I should be somewhat conservative and go with the 1.5Y (1850 Kv) so as to keep from going completely insane. The longer motor should have more torque, so I could probably start off with and X642 and go up from there. Our pond is somewhat small and the LSH-SV27 is about the biggest/fastest combo I would want to run there. 1/8 scale is out of the question.

I do have a hankering to build a 1/14 scale Finlay-designed Atlas Van Lines though.........

Stay tuned for a bunch of my micro stuff that I have resurrected. See last photo.

Sorry Doc, I confused the actual Kv of the SV-27 motor with its specs, it was actually closer to 1500, see post #13:

          https://forums.offshoreelectrics.com...SV27+AND+motor

In 2007 the SV-27’s 36-56 motor Kv was supposed to be rated at 1800:

          https://forums.offshoreelectrics.com...-on-SV27-motor

Bottom line it really doesn’t matter, the 1700 Kv Raider motor ( https://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pr...prod=ose-R3660 ) should work just fine.

More excellent information. I'm more and more inclined to go with the 1850 Kv motor now, just to keep from getting too far over the top. I'll keep everybody posted.

BTW, I realize an new ESC with a higher amp rating will have to be part of the deal. Looks like I may have an old SV27 motor and ESC for sale real soon and real cheap!!

Update: As I'm getting back into this, I discovered a partially completed Graupner Systems Cat that I was planning to run in LSO with 12 NiCds and an SS1 Cordite motor. Now that NiCds and brushed 700 motors are Passé, I might have a home for the SV27 motor as the Campbell gets an upgrade. I doubt the Systems could handle modern power systems on 4S, but it could be a fun "knock-about" with the SV27 power plant. This power system should be about a pound lighter than the "original" drive train so it might be fun. Mmmmm... Yet another project.
