    Waterproofing the Mean Machine hatch

I recently aquired a used Mean Machine (OSE's boat) - I used it for the first time yesterday and used tape to seal the hatch. It capsized and was upside down for about 10 minutes while I retrieved it. By the time I got to it it had taken in alot of water.
I'm in the process of installing bolts and weather stripping but I have my doubts that it will be water proof.
Can someone please advise on the best method of securing and sealing the hatch.

Tape is the best method, tried and proven for decades. But you have to use the right tape and apply it correctly. I have crashed boats at over 80 mph, let the boats sit upside down for ten minutes, and have the insides dry when retrieved - using only tape. Are you certain there was not more crash damage, like a cracked seam?

First thing is you hav to make sure the hatch is very rigid if you want the foam seal and bolts to work. If it's not super stiff it won't seal well. I can submerge my boats and not get any water in. Tape is good insurance when your attempting high speeds as I crashed one of mine recently and the hatch broke and water got in. The crash was so bad I was surprised the hull didn't break in half

The old style hatch is hard to tape, and get a good seal. The new style (flat) hatch is a lot better.

What style do you have, can you post a picture??

        OSE sells the flat hatch.

No cracks and the hatch is pretty stiff. Maybe I just need more practice with the tape. I've installed four rivnuts and weather stripping but will use tape as well. I've got the older version hatch which is a mission to tape. The newer flatter hatch looks easier.

            .

Exactly. For tape to stick with authority, make sure there's no wax on the taping surfaces (wipe with solvent - lighter fluid works well) and make sure the tape [Best = Renfrew Hockey tape] is not too cold - body temperature best (keep in pocket )
