2S scratch cat 24" Jesse J mods to shocker plans

So in order to race our new N2 offshore class, I decided to modify shocker's design. This is also in the Video thread.
I added 2" to the width, slanted the sides and flattened the deck.
here is the beginning. I will work on updating and adding all my build photos as I worked through it.

I'll upload jpg of the plans in this post later; need to convert from pdf. First is the final outcome.
I will document the hardware/electronics later. for now here are early pics of the birth of the scratch cat 24"

    IMG_2615.jpg

paper glue the plans to the 1/8" balsa and head to the band saw
    IMG_2568.jpg

Piece it together and make sure all bulk heads are aligned as best you can then CA on a building board for flattest and truest hull.
Incidentally, this is the prototype out of ply... way too heavy and I wanted a 5" tunnel instead of 4".
Back to the drawing board to add an inch of width and 1/4" depth to tunnel and flatten the deck.
Compound curves can wreak havoc with these fragile frames.

This shows the angled sides - I was aiming at better stability in the turns.
I have noticed on my slo mos that frequently the flip starts with a vertical side pulling water up and causing more drag which enhances the roll into a roll over.
    IMG_2579.jpg

Next post will be order in which I skinned the frame and added 2part foam to the bow and under the ride pads.
First round of skinning. started with the floor on the building board.
then got the front sponson bottoms skinned.

more than one way to skin a cat...

      sorry couldn't resist the title.

the tunnel floor was attached while on the building board.
      IMG_2581.jpg

Then the side skin goes first. This gets tricky at the front, but is key to do this next to add rigidity for the bottom skin.
I added some 3/16" bass square to strengthen the bulkheads.
this helps keep the thing from crushing when you are twisting the ply on the sponsons

      IMG_2585.jpg

I started at the front, because I wanted to add my foam and add even more rigidity.
Then I added some formers along the bulkheads to attach the front of the step to (sweeping inward as per Shocker plans).
      IMG_2583.jpg

Before skinning the back sponson bottoms, I cut the shape of the step in the sides.

        adding the strength (and flotation)

I am getting pretty good at estimating amount of US composites 2 part foam to use. about 2oz per side.
I also added some CF paper to the tunnel and battery trays.
        IMG_2588.jpg

then I take my saw and cut it down, then sand the deck curve in being sure to make it flush with the wood.
I was careful not to take off too much, since I wanted this to support the decking.
        IMG_2591.jpg

I added a battery tray at about the same level as the tunnel and filled the ride pad area with foam and trimmed like above.

        IMG_2593.jpg
        IMG_2594.jpg

Here is my problem area, the back corners ... How will I get that to look good...

          finishing the Lambo cat

I took the tunnel back past the transom and made a little bay for the strut and rudder to sit.
This has a tape-hinge flap that covers the hardware but leaves the back open.
          IMG_2597.jpg

here the corners came out pretty good.
I filled the cavity with foam then CA/acceleratored the ply in place.
          IMG_2599.jpg

          IMG_2600.jpg

She be pretty wide, but built for stability and finishing races!
          IMG_2601.jpg

Must have been the sausage flavored epoxy I used...

            paint and decals

I used Duplicolor automotive primer and yellow (a can of each!)
            IMG_2607.jpg

I had ordered a Proboat 24 hull that came with these decals...
worked pretty nice to break up the width and give her some motion.
            IMG_2606.jpg

Then ordered me up some motorcycle decals of the Lambo shield and lettering
            IMG_2605.jpg

painted me a windshield so the dudes can see out.
            IMG_2615.jpg

next posting I will show some hardware and interior shots.
She weighs 4lbs taped up and ready to race.
