Clearcoat question for all the painting Pros

Hi, I have never applied a second clearcoat and wondered if:

    After I lay a colorcoat
    then a coat of clear
can i sand the clear with high grain grit and have it still come out shiny?
Or will the cloudy look of the sanded clear remain thru the second clearcoat?

    Thanks

You'll need enough clear coats in order to sand them properly. Then you can wet sand with 2000 grit lightly, then polish, and it should come out well. Your main primer layer has to be 100% smooth too.

Are you saying you want to sand a current clear coated surface and then apply a top coat over? In short, you absolutely can. but why do you want to I guess is my question. You could simply wet sand the current clear coat and buff it out, actually resurfacing the old clear to like new.

If you must add a second coat Just wet sand with 400 or so and clean well, if you are simply wanting to re coat or clear over some new decals.

I like to lay down 3 coats of clear after the base color, this gives you a nice thick coat to sand. Depending on how smooth the final layer of clear is, I will used 1000-1500 grit and work my way up to 3k. Use some rubbing compound and polish after. If you do it right, you can get mirror like finish.

Even if you mess up, just sand it smooth again and reapply another clear coat. Just remember to sand the important lines, thick coat will round your edges.

I have some "decals" that may not be water resitant so i would like to add a coat over it. The decals are to be applied to the current clear so I was wanting to high grit sand, add decals, the apply a second coat. Sounds like I can based on answers, i dont care to do all the compound poloshing after, not good at that. i was just worried that the sanded clear would give a foggy look to the second coat. Thanks

There's no reason not to use some buffing compound to really bring up the shine. Think of it as ultra fine sandpaper and really makes the finish "pop"

Yeah sand it then re clear. You won't see sand marks.

Most people screw up and sand color coats. That's when you see sand marks.
              You're good to go man
