You can run on the NICD or NIMH.

I have an old Proboat 45A ESC and a 1500kv motor that would bolt into the REK leg and make that tunnel scoot right along. You'd need a drive shaft for that leg and smaller prop to bolt on, 38mm might be a good place to start.
If you get a leg, let me know and I'll send the motor and ESC to you.

hi guys my brother hooked me up with a lil glass mono its 20" x 6" do you think this would be a better boat to start him off with or stick with the tunnel its got all the hardware, needs a paint job (easy part), motor and mount but i have a bunch of old 540 brushed motors and im sure i could make a mount easy enough.DSCF8309.jpgDSCF8310.jpg

Get the mono running! You're almost there.
The mono is a better (more forgiving) platform for a youngster too

ok im thinking this thing needs run time over speed so im going to have to figure that out, if its dead in 5 minutes i think he will loose interest faster than the boat will go.

5 minutes is a long time for a kid.... That would be a good start.... Trust me, I've got two and that's about the limit of their attention span.
After that, make it go faster or mount a gun so they can shoot stuff!!!

ok, if i scrape up some cash to step into the present and buy lipos what would the minimum size be that i could use with a drive setup like the proboat one you were telling me about out? im guessing they would be lighter and last better than old nimh packs, i layed a brushed motor, my speed control and a pack in this thing and it feels pretty heavy not sure it will float, lol, and then if i add guns she might just sink for sure, lol.

That's a tough one my friend.
This setup was originally in an SV27 on 4s, I managed to cram that system into a 20" x 8" plastic hull and it was a tight fit. This was my first RC boat, hull donated by my neighbor. Here it is with a 4s 2700 35c LIPO.

It will work in your hull, but it's even heavier than the brushed system. It is really fun to play with though...in a mostly uncontrollable way!!!

You would want to wait on ordering a battery until you figured out how much space you had available with everything in. LIPO batteries come in all shapes and sizes:

Can you post up some pictures of the interior?
We can try to figure it out from there!

LOL There is a lot of truth to this. Especially the gun part.
