    Hydro build

I am going to build one of these later this year

    http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...prod=df-vortex

It may be my first entry into the MMEU club in Detroit. I have absolutely no clue when it comes to hydro's. My first question is... would anyone recomend using a wire drive in this? If not why? I am also looking for power ideas and would like to keep amp draw around 60A if possible. Since I will be using this for club racing I guess it would fall under LSH class so what kinda power do most clubs run as far as cells? I was thinking a 2S would be nice and light but 4S would be the way to keep it lower on amperage draw. ANY ideas are greatly appreciated.

If you can make a wire drive work (and I see no reason it wouldn't), that is the best way to go. At 22" it may be a bit small for LSH (SV27 motor/ESC and 4S). remember that the Finlay 1/16 scale boats are about this same size.

How heavy is the hull? If it is "stout" then a 540L may be a good choice for 2S. If it is a light hull, you may get away with a 540S motor on 2S. A 5000 rpm/V "S"-can motor on 2S will draw somewhere around 70 amps in a "sport" setup. More if you want to race. This puts you back into the higher voltages for "racing" speeds.

If I were King for a Day, I might do it up as a 3S boat. That way you could get decent speeds at reasonable currents and still be reasonably light. The problem with that is very few organizations run 3S classes.

I have been toying with the 11XX NeuMotors in small hulls. I've talked with Steve (Neu) at length about these motors and they are capable of handling a lot of watts. More than listed on his website. The drawback is they lack the torque of the bigger-rotor motors, but by using the long-can version, you get some of that back. I am about to try an 1112/1.5D (4800 rpm/V) motor in a beefy 16" mono to see how it does.

If your hull is really light, you may want to try something like that on 2S with a tiny prop like a D/T X427.

That was just a little joke..

Thanks Dr. Jet. I think by the looks of a buddy's boat a wire drive should work. I think I will start ordering hardware now. Thanks for the advise.

Well sure If i had the parts all setting here I could throw it together. First I would need the hull to be in stock... Then I would need a sponsor cause the bills round here show I aint got much mula.

I was going to build a couple of these as well at some point, perhaps over the winter. Lets get this rolling!

Mike, if I had kids and a wife, I probably wouldn't be into R/C at all. Next summer is cool too. Kenny and I are discussing 1/8 scales to run at MC10 (?) next season.

                      Mich,

Come on down!!! I am having a great time racing with the MMEU folks. The boat you have a link to would fall into the N2 class that we run. The requirements are as follows

                      1. 2S or 6 round cells for batts
                      2. Motor must be under 5200KV
                      3. Motor must be an "S" sized can

It's kind of a modified N2 set up. They are trying to keep things competitive and reasonably priced.
