48" Mono Build

I won this boat in a boat race. I think I like this better than the trophies! Chuckle. Anyway, nothing too special about this build other than the size of it, but I am going share some pictures as we go.

So, it's a black boat. I like black, but I decided I wanted to do something different. I am going to keep the bottom black, paint the top silver with some black left, and some blue metallic areas as well. Should be fun. I got the base coat of metallic down in these pictures. I am going to lightly sand it and then put down the real metallic paint and the blue.

Question, I left the center portion taped up because it will be black or should I paint that center strip black? I think it will look right if I just sand the paint lightly for adhesion and clear it? Concerned it won't go back to nice black and will show sand marks?

Check out the redneck paint booth. I have used this to do some other boats and it has worked pretty well. Keeps the dust off the filter is attached to a box fan and it keeps most of the overspray under control. You will see the filter change colors when I put down the blue etc.

The first layer of base metallic. Going to sand lightly in some spots and then put down the real metallic color I will be using. This boat just barely fits in the booth! Usually I have the boat hung from a coat hanger! You can't tell really, but this just sits on top of my work bench. I cover everything else in the shop so the overspray gremlins don't get the other boats. I did not do this one time and spent many hours buffing off the over spray on my finished boats!! Don't care to repeat that fun.

I am using Createx Automotive water based paint. I tried this paint out on a smaller boat and had good results. Seems to be holding up well and I don't miss the fumes and mess. However, I am using House of Kolor (HOK) automotive clear as I started with that clear coat on my first boat and am used to dealing with mixing it up (3 part mixture) and you get a nice smooth hard finish.

Good looking hull, is that a Vern Kilmer offering? I had one once and it was beautiful but painfully thin.

I'd guess its an Aeromarine Challenger or a copy of one. I had a cut down version years ago which had much less free board at the transom, and it was 43" long. But, this looks identical to the original 48" version to me. Look here- http://shop.redlinemotors.us/Aeromar...RLPM-AMCPM.htm

Doesn't match Vern boat on the top deck. It is not a challenger, but does look like it. No one knows who made it at this point.

Well a day of painting is done. I still need to do some clean up work and might do some pinstripes and also need to think what kind of decals I may want. I have found that the difference between a great paint job and a good paint job is about double the man hours. I will just call this a good one and be happy with it. I still need to put down the clear coat so it is a dull finish right now. The black is especially dull since that is not paint, but the actual hull color just sanded. You can't see it, but the hull is black underneath. I also did not really push the hatch all the way down for the picture since the paint is very fresh.

It might be awhile before I can get the clear on because I am on the road the next two weeks, but if we get some decent dry weather next weekend I might be able to put on the clear. I also got all my parts in from offshore electrics, so soon we will start the build part of this thread. So far, none of the hulls have matched. See how the top of the bow is elevated where the black stripe is on top? That last one seems to have the same "style" as mine though. I have not seen a match to that, but a lot of them look very close.

Really nice color on that boat! Not mine, the metal flake one!... chuckle. I do like the blue I got on this one though. Should have painted the whole boat that color..

Sadly, I had mine for only three weeks til I hit what most of us believe was a large Turtle at 65 mph, was in Daveys locker for a week..................saved the motor and hardware though, that was about three years ago.

All I can say is WOW. That really split up. I lost one in a race about a month ago. We tried several different things to retrieve it, but never to be seen again. First one I have ever lost, hopefully the last. As luck would have it, one of my club members was filming my boat slo-mo right when it happened. HE put it to music, pretty funny actually. The wreck is at the very end..

That sucks too, kind of a slow death compared to mine. I hired a Diver who found mine(the bottom that was ripped off) in 5 minutes in 12 ft. Cost me a C-note but saved a Castle 2028, the internal mounting and all the hardware.

That is crazy. It really just ripped the boat in half. Funny how we both got the demise of our boats on film when at least for me, 90 percent of the time that isn't happening.
