Help with the seam on my CF HPR C-5009

    Hi peoples...

I am STILL working on my HPR and have put it back on my bench to get some paint on her but before I get that far, she needs a little bodywork...

The seam (joint between the top and bottom of the hull needs working on to get it completely flush before painting plus, I need to get rid of the marks left but what I believe Hans Peter uses to push the hull out of the mold and I have a little damage to some edges that also need filling...

You can see most of what I'm talking about here...

And this is my design... sktched out on good old fashioned paper!

I have a guy at work making up some airbrush masks for my and for smaller sponsors logos I will print out some transfers...

Any advice on filling and/or paint would be great!

Well, I have used glazing putty for my sponson blue printing and on the bottoms of monos for hooks as well as seams and other imperfections. It dries reasonably quick(hrs or overnight) and sands easily.

This is my Cheetah I just did this summer. As you can see I did the same thing, no joint seem all the way around. I used Dura Glass and finished with Icing. Leaves a mice and smooth finish. Don't use Bondo, it is power based and any water gets to it it will soak it up like a sponge.

When you have the boat painted, how does water get through the paint and the clear coat to soak in bondo? Just wondering.

What is Bondo based? Power? Most Body Filler "Bondo is a brand" is Polyester based as in Polyester Resin. Dura glass is a good product for filling Fiberglass.

              Bondo is talcum powder based.

OK I got ya, yes it has Talc in it but it's not Talc based. It's Polyester Resin based, just for the heck of it take some baby powder "it's mostly talc" put some water in it and see what happens. Unless you stir it real good it doesn't mix real well, it almost looks to repell water.

Glassing putty, Dura Glass, Icing??? I don't think I can get these products here in the UK...???

I have Gel-cote filler but whenever I've used it before, It's never really cured? I was thinking of using that and have been told I need to cover it to remove the air from its surface??? Not sure?

You could use Marine RX made by West Marine. I bought mine off of Amazon or if you have a West Marine or boat supply store near you they tend to have it usually in stock.

Glazing putty, Spot putty, Icing, Etc. is all the same product. Duraglass is something different, they also make a Light weight Body Filler that would work. I'm sure you can get this stuff in the UK, you just need to find a store that sells supplies for Body and Fender Shops they should have what you need.

West marine 410 microfiche fairing filler used with epoxy resin. A HPR deserves the best!
