    Phil Thomas Roundnose 40 Build

After drooling for a while, I spoke to Phil and ordered the hull. He was fantastic to work with, answered all of my questions and delivered it before he said he would have it done. I told him I was concerned about the weight of the batteries etc so he did the engine bay in carbon. I'm very impressed with the hull - very crisp and some very nice curves. As others have said, VERY few pinholes. The cowl fit is great and everything is extremely square and straight. Not much fitting at all to do here. Phil marks the centerline for the stuffing box/mount, turn fin location and provides a nice instruction sheet. Sorry for the cell pics.

Power is a 1527 1Y from Steven and a Swordfish 240 (great service from Steven as well). I'm going to get a mount from Jim Williams and I have a turn fin on order from Dick T.

Looking for suggestions for batteries/prop - 6S - mostly recreational so I'm ok giving up some runtime for some duration (I think lol). I've heard the motor may be a bit much for the hull (requiring too big a prop), but if so I will use it in another application.

NAMBA rules limit you to a total of 10,000 mah. Just in case you decide to race that pretty boat.

Thanks Ray, good point I wasn't aware of that.

Interesting to see how you are going to fit the motor and batteries. you may want to cut out access holes in the engine well sides and install them in the hull, allowing you to move them front and back for balance adjustment. Just go by the balance point in the setup info for starters.

Thanks Phil, good idea. I'm going to get the batteries and lay it out and see how it looks. I was surprised at how large the swordfish 240 esc is. I spoke to a gentlemen who converted this hull with a similar power setup and he said it balanced perfectly with the batteries against the front of the engine well so I'm optimistic :)

Here you go...I've been hearing that these lipos are very good (and great support too!)

BTW...IMPBA has a limit of 10,000 mah as well (if you were planning on racing...)

Hi guys, finally cleared some time to get going on this. My question is if I will have a problem with the ESC on top of the batteries (was going to build a small divider/shelf) to give some clearance. Not a ton of room, those batteries are big (I got a deal from a local shop on some Pulse Ultra 6S 5500's, will get some other batteries if I decide to race her) right now she balances right on the money as per Phil's suggestion and I would prefer not to have to add weight. Phil, the batteries seem to be too large to put into the side of the engine pan. Thanks guys.

I think what Phil was talking about was cutting access and putting them out in the Sponson area. I did this to my Vortex Hydro and it worked great!

Thanks guys, FL Raptor I just looked again and indeed there is enough room (its a lot bigger in there than it looks once I tried to put the battery in the sponsoon area using the bottom hatch). For this setup 6S/1527 1Y is one water inlet enough to cool both the ESC and the motor or do I need to use a second (couldn't find anything in the search function)? Thanks in advance.

I would just cut out some access holes and stick some velcro in there, also put in some pool noodle or pipe insulation to keep the batteries in place.
here is a setup on one of my Stealth boats

I always use a pickup and a outlet for each, some people say it's overkill but I think it's cheap insurance and this way you know for sure both are getting plenty of water....

Thanks - Phil that pic is very helpful, appreciate it. FL what is your water pickup of choice (using a speedmaster rudder for the primary one) and where do you suggest the exit?

I deffinetly like rudder pickups, here's a Speedmaster setup on one of my Hydros that works real good. DSC02500.jpg For the exits if you're going to be racing it, I usually put mine just behind the Sponson on the left side up on the deck so they shoot up in the air. This way you can see that the water is flowing..DSC02496.jpg You can see them in this pic..
