Some new things for 2014...ML Boatworks

Well, a few things have been going on that I wanted to share with everyone. First, over the last couple of months I have been trying different things with gel coats...parts and more complex mold making, clear gel with metal flake and proper cloth/ mat combinations for most of the cowls I offer. I have finally decided to make gel coating a permanent part of the ML Boatworks cowling lineup. I have 2 molds left that need to be resurfaced so a gel coated surface will be nice and clean, but other than that, all my other molds are ready to go.

I want to thank Dick Loeb's for his never ending help and Kentley Porter of Rudolph Brothers for coming down and showing me how to use the Freekote mold release system. With this mold release I don't have to rewax every time a part needs to be laid up, so the molds will always be ready to go and I can lay up multiple parts in one day without spending hours waxing and waxing. This should help me keep some backlog of cowlings on the shelf, getting them out to the customer quicker. This mold release is absolutely amazing to say the least!

The best part of all of this change over is there will be no change in the kit costs. The only change is a total lack of pinholes, and parts that seem to be stronger!

Next, myself and a friend recently acquired a large 56" F1 Champ tunnel boat/ master plug/ molds based on the Seebold Bud Light from the mid 90's, and a matching Champ gas size outboard. This is more of a fun run type hull and I doubt would be competitive in the gas tunnel class (The GX480 gas tunnel handles that class just fine.) I currently will be handling all the layups of the F1 tunnel, and outboard cowlings, and he will be handling getting things going with the outboard. Anyone interested in the F1 tunnel and outboard can contact me directly until I get the boat up on the website. I will pass along your contact info to my friend about the outboard. I also plan on doing a static outboard for display purposes...the outboard is 16" tall from top to bottom...should may a great office piece! I am also working with the current owner of AMPS/ International hobbies to put the outboard under his licensing so it can be offered with full Mercury Champ decals instead of just a bare cowling.

If anyone has any questions or comments let me know! Thanks, Mike

Here are some pics of a few of the new cowl layups, and the upper master plug of the F1 tunnel and outboard cowling/ lower unit.

Yep, same resin I have always used, but now the exterior is a high quality white gel coat. The parts are coming out stiffer than ever, and the finish is shiny and smooth!

Just a little curious to know more about that mono, (last pic). Is that the Wild Thing? It is the first hull I've seen with ALL of the strakes running ALL of the way to the transom.
I've only seen one other hull that extended strakes so far, and they were only the 2 far outside ones.

Mike, What's the price for one of those new gel coated cowls for the GP 400 V2?

Also sent you an email the other day...did you get it?

Run, Its actually an AMPS/ International Hobbies Baja 200s. I made molds so I could make myself an outboard, and outdrive version of my original Baja 200s. Unfortunately, these are for personal use only. They are licensed by a friend of mine, but I only got permission to make them for my own use. The originals are 30 years old and a collectors item these days. Here is a pic of my Emerald green metal flake outboard version I made. The black one will be the outdrive model. I was showing that picture to show everyone that possible metal flake cowling options could be a possibility some time soon!

Also, I just sent you a reply to your email today...Sorry about that..it was lost in the wash. I just went through like 1900 emails the other day cleaning up...they stack up quick these days! haha

Yeah, they are pretty much the coolest RC boat thing that ever happened. They are the only company that has had licensing rights to this extent ever in rc boating. They had (well have since a friend of mine has current licensing) Baja, Formula, Skeeter, Starcraft, Velden, Molinari, Wellcraft,Seebold, Yamaha, Suzuki, Merc, Johnson, Evinrude, Mariner, and more I don't even know about! I sold off all my personal hulls, except my SAW tunnel to put money towards the collection. I started collecting about 4 months ago...not bad for 4 months of searching! Collecting these things is like freakin crack!

BTW Darin, all those outboard are gear driven, and have OS or KB nitro engines..Some I have do not have the nitro engines anymore and I will put an FE setup in them...some will get run...some won't...Wait till I show you the Starcraft CPS-20 I am restoring..its the boat that jumped the hill in the James Bond 007 movie!

Your a sick man Mike, way too much stuff tucked away at your place :)

Can you look into a price for me to cut outboard boat stands and postage over here? Base it on 3 stands for a 31" boat...we can work out the details later.
