Just inherited a large Catamaran, need rudder system help

    Hey All:

I just inherited a large catamaran from one of my friends. It is just the hull so i will need to supply the rest.

I have a bunch of rc cars and crawlers so i can figure the motor/esc out pretty well. What is baffling me currently is the rudders and the related assemblies.

Can someone tell/point me to a rudder kit for large cats? Also, which is best a push/pull rudder with linkages or a pull/pull with cable? If there is no such kits (i looked around alot, I could find rudders, and then boots, but no all in one kits)

Also, does anyone know of a place that can mill custom rudder sizes?

My intentions with the boat are to do some surf jumps in the ocean while it is being filmed, etc.

    Cheers!

Hello there and congrats on your new cat. Seeing. As these boat vary greatly in design and one persons vision on a large cat varies from another your going to have to provide a lot more information. One could not even guess at what you have given the information. You will need to provide make model and size of your boat including width. Pictures are a must. The boat itself, transom, bottom and inside for a start. What are your goals, is it to go fast or more scale type speeds. Selection of motor and speed control will be very different from rc cars. These boats demand a lot, motor and speed control will vary greatly based on what you want it to to. If it's actually a big cat you may need to look at a high voltage setups. Your rudder will also vary by boat design, some are flat across the back and some have rudder bracket standoffs for a more scale look. If it's a single motor drive you may need to offset the rudder to the side. Providing pictures, size and your expectations are a minimum if you expect people to be able to help you. I had rc car experience when I got into this a year ago and very little of it was good to me once I started to learn a little bit. I could best say it's almost another language in comparison! Get the information posted and somebody will be along with the answers you need and the experience to back it up. You may have to be a little patient getting responses but the information you receive will be top notch. I know on some other sites you can get a dozen postings within the hour but you don't need a twelve year old relaying some setup he saw on you tube being the guiding factor as to where your money is being spent. Typically they end up being very hot setups with the life expectancy of a ticking time bomb. The information you receive here will guide you to a rock solid setup that you can enjoy for a long time. You will not find a better place or better people to guide you onward to a successful build. You have to do a little more work upfront to get things rolling though. Good luck on your build!

BTW, spend some time using the search feature here or look under the boat building forums. There are a bunch of high end cat builds being done at the moment. It helps reading so you don't ask some of the very basic questions and shows your doing your part to. I found out quick that nobody is going to spoon feed you here! Thought I would point that out.

I'll start with: what is big cat? And perhaps manufacturer/builder/former? There are a couple of places to look

Hi and welcome to OSE ...some great advice has already been posted. I noticed that you work and live on boats, so you already are aware how corrosive saltwater is. Its seriously magnified for RC boats. Freshwater flushes and anti corrosion products IE: corrosion X, motor cleaner etc are a must use after each day of running. You asked about all in one packages, I have never come across any (not saying they dont exist) but for a saltwater setup Id be looking at the better quality components. Post some pics soon as you can.......DJ
