I have used putty or clay so I imagine "plastilene" is something similar.Wax can be used as well. All you need is a material that will fill the imperfections between the parting board and plug and be easily trimmed away.
BTW...I imagine some manufacturer is cringing at the thought of someone using his hard work as a plug for someone elses mold .IMHO not an issue for an individual making a replacement I guess but start selling hulls and morality should come into play somewhere along the line.

Yes I agree for personal use making a mold is fine but if you are selling what you used for a master made from someone’s hard work there defiantly could be some copy write issues which could get rather ugly. So I say enjoy the tech.

agreed. Anthing I would do off an existing hull design would be strictly for personal use, where I wanna tweak something. I've been ripped off like that before, but never had a pattent or anything, so not much I could have done. I used to manufacture shorty antennas for my car. One guy who bought it was in the process of starting an online tuner store. Lo and behold, about 2 weeks after he receives it, he's selling ones just like mine.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. You are wright the word "plasteline" does not exist. I meant "plasticine" that kids play with. I put it just to extend the mold and make a little bigger from the original. Once everything is dry I first remove the plasticine and gives me space to work with the Plastic putty knives to detach the mold.

I did not actually weigh the original and the new boats with accuracy but seemed similar. But if you use for the new boat, clear gel coat and one layer of CF medium thickness I am sure that the new boat will be very light.

The method really works. I took the first instructions from a boat building small yard and from a shop which speciallizes in polyester and resins and put into practise. I really liked the original boat that I had bought and was determined to make a mold. Good luck.

And finally when you make the top and bottom parts, you place the top half on the bottom to see if they perfectly match (they will). Some trimming may be required, because the new parts will be slightly bigger, remember that plasticine is also used in the new boat parts to make them a little bigger and leave some space for the detachment.
Once the trimming is done at the edges of top and bottom you place them in position with masking tape to cover all the seam nicely. Then you apply from the inside the epoxy and CF.
