Carbone Fibre Genesis (My First Build)

    Hey Guys,

What a great forum you have going on here, I have been lurking for about a month but have not actively contributed too much.

I was bitten by the electric RC boat bug about 6-8 weeks ago, although I have been into RC for many years, playing with buggies, drifters, tourers, F1's, scalers and heli's etc.

I should really grow up one day! Since I have been on the boat fad, then I have accumulated a TFL genesis and a TFL F3 Sprint Tunnel.

Both have been heavily modified with all of the go fast bits and re-enforcements required to actually go fast without breaking crap. (I have broken alot of crap)

I've been enjoying the genesis a lot so I decided to order myself a carbon fibre bare hull to embark on my first build. It ended up being pretty cheap as TFL stuffed up and supplied me one with a white gel coat top, I didn't like it at first but it has grown on me a lot.

Here are a few photos of my progress thus far, please feel free to post any constructive criticism.
    • Carbon fibre genesis bare hull.
    • Carbon fibre motor mount for 40mm motor
    • Alloy servo mount
    • Alloy T bar.
    • Offset rudder setup.
    • Dual pickup rudder
    • Complete 3/16 drive line, one piece flex cable
    • TP 1600kv 4060 Motor
    • Swordfish 200a 6-8S ESC

Here is the hull in its bare form, I decided to stick a RCBB sticker on there as I buy all of my hard parts from them. The owners service is the best I have encountered in years of shopping online.

Marking up and drilling the holes for the strut!

A make shift backing plate that I installed inside the hull to mount the strut.

I spent a lot of time marking up the motor mount to get it perfectly square.

Getting there, motor mount and strut installed.

A couple of dual water inlets to feed from the dual pickup rudder.

Installed a water outlet on each side of the hull, again took a little while lining them up perfectly haha

I ended up taking the offset rudder off the fibre glass genesis, i'm not sure if I will run it on this build yet..

    Starting to take shape!

Every battery mount on the market seemed to be 56mm wide, too fat for the genesis... So I embarked on building my own.

I'm really happy with them, a layer of non slip rubber over the top and they will work just fine. Quite light at only 50grams each.

All glued in, servo and stuffing tube to go!

Looking good. I really like the Genesis hull, I only have the HK version but its great for the money. Looking forward to seeing this through to completion and hearing feedback from you! Jeff

I like the look. Is the top half of the hull fibreglass?

It does look sharp with the black bottom and white gel coat top. A few decals and its done!

The whole boat is carbon fibre, the top half has simply been painted with white gel coat. :)

Thanks man :) I'll probably just end up throwing a number on her, unless I come across some real nice decals :)

Soldered up the motor and have started working on the fitment, will most likely drop the shaft in tomorrow.

looking nice i been wanting to build a carbon genesis......i have the fiberglass version with a leopard 4082 1600kv seaking 180 amp on a x450 prop with the 3/16 shaft my top is 65mph buth runs about 61 all the time.. i run the same offset rudder but i think it creates alot of drag and slows me down but definitely helps the handling.

Drilled the hole for the stuffing tube, I really like the T bar concept!

All lined up and ready to secure, for once I managed to bend the stuffing tube perfect first go

Epoxy putty to seal up the gaps.

Strut end of the stuffing tube

Servo mount all ready to go

Bad shot of the rear end fully assembled.

Just before she went on her maiden run!

I will take some more photos of the completed setup when its not so hot, it's been about 40 °C over the past three days. Thats about 104 °F for the yanks!

The boat runs very very smooth and the power in quite insane, I clocked it at 100kmph / 62 mph with a 46mm prop with no timing in the motor and about 3/4 throttle.

To go faster I am going to have to wait for a day when the water is glass, most likely need to tinker with the prop/strut position a bit as well to see max speed.

Very very happy with it all. It's cost me around $700 which is fairly impressive given the motor / esc combo takes up about $260 of that.

That part is available for sale from RCBoatBitz here in Australia, good service and reasonable pricing!

I will take some video of this beast in the next day or so, the power that it has is crazy. I have tried a few different 3660 and 4074 1600kv motors in my fibre glass genesis but nothing compares to this TP motor!

I just need to dial in the strut position, she is running a little bit wet. But I dont mind it actually because it is hell stable and easily getting into the 105kmph mark with a 4614 prop.

Another important update is the fact that I have given up on Swordfish ESC's, both of the 220amp units I received were pretty much DOA. I will never buy another of them.

However, I did manage to get my hands onto a RCBB 200amp ESC from RCBoatBitz. This ESC is atleast 30% bigger in physical size, the cap banks are larger and it comes with 8 gauge wire all round.

The ESC has so many different programming options, nothing like I have ever seen before. It performs like an absolute beast! I was using a Turnigy 180amp ESC on this for a couple of runs whilst waiting for the RCBB unit.

The RCBB unit has atleast double the power of the T180. I can't get past 70% throttle and the boat is hitting 105 kmph...

For $130AUD, I will be buying many of these speed controllers next year!

Nice, those TP motors have been getting some good reviews recently. Im going to try 2 of them in my twin cat build. I hear ya on the Swordfish, never again here either. The turnigy/Hobbywing esc's are not bad we been using them alot with xtra capbanks, I agree that they are not the most efficient, but with them you at least get what you payed for ! Your new esc is a beast...looking fwd to seeing more on what your doin....Merry Xmas....DJ
