    Rick's Insane Mono 34

    The courier just called and the hull will arrive in the next couple of hours.

    I'm still waiting on most of the parts, so the build will start off slow. I have lots of ideas for the build that I've plagiarized from this site, but I know I still have lots of questions. It's my first from scratch build, so thanks in advance for your advice.

    The power plant for this build will be:
    • TP4060 (40x92) 2040 kv
    • SF Pro+ 220A
    • 4s2p, 10,000mAh total

      Some pics of the boat and motor.

      I had Jeff @ Insane CF the floor as he was laying up the hull. The fit and finish of the hull is top notch. The aluminium rails are from HRC rails and I and de-anodized the orange mounts so they would match

        First on the to do list:
        • Fill in the area above the wood in the transom with epoxy mixed with milled CF, add a piece of 1/8 ply to cover the full transom, then cover it all with CF cloth.
        • Use 2 part foam to fill in some of the recesses in the hatch, sand it smooth, then cover it all with a layer of s-glass.
        • Build a bulkhead for the bow out of 3/16 ply, epoxy it in, fill the bow with 2 part foam, sand it flush with the bulkhead, then CF over the bulkhead.

          Rick, questions:
          - what's the official length? is it ok for "P"?
          - how flat is the bottom? I'm also curious to know if the bottom will warp a bit when epoxied-in parts get added to the inside.
          - you going to paint it?

            1. The official measure came in at 33 3/8" so she's good for P-Class.
            2. It's pretty much dead on in terms of being flat. I have some ideas to reinforce the floor with plywood where the motor mount rails will attach. Also the battery trays, ESC tray and Servo/receiver trays will all be epoxied in plywood, so I'm quite confident it won't have the chance to warp.
            3. Probably just decals and/or a wrap for now. Not sure I'll every be creative enough to come up with a paint scheme. Recall my RC cars were all white with just decals to dress them up a little. I'm open to suggestions though.

                Interesting........After some measurements, the transom of the Insane 34 is only 1/2" wider and 1/4" taller than my Revolt. Going to have to rethink the size of my trim tabs and turn fins. I thought I needed to go much larger than what was on the Revolt.

                  It is a good looking boat Rick. You putting in the foam for strength? If you are doing a bulkhead that would put an air pocket up there for flotation without the weight.
                  Mind you this can bite you in the butt if you get a crack in the nose from collision. Ask me how I know

                    The foam would be dual purpose, rigidity and floatation. The bulkhead is really just to dress it up.

                    I understand that a major damage will quickly turn into an exercise in grinding. The thought of it makes me feel sick already. The foam will solidify the bow significantly though. A collision with a boat could be survivable. A collision with a rock and it will quickly turn into a salvage operation. I sport boat at the cottage with lots of open water so my risks are minimized......I keep telling myself this.

                      I'm going to document the weights of the hull and hatch as I do what I do to them. I feel like I'm in a lab at University again.

                      Out of the box:
                      • Hull = 1182g
                      • Hatch = 222g

                        Worked to add reinforcement the entire height of the transom this afternoon.

                        Got out the Dremel and ground down the high spots along the edges of the existing wood in the transom.

                        Cut a piece of 3/16" ply to fit the entire height of the transom. Made a thick paste from MVS Epoxy and Cabosil to fill in the top recessed area then used the remainer of the paste to attach the plywood reinforcement. The paste was thick enough that I could use my finger to really work it into the seams.

                        Finished it off with CF. It was my first time working with CF and thank God I bought the stuff with scrim woven into it cause I definitely overworked it. Looks good though and strong to boot.

                          Some progress on the hatch..................

                          Added a plywood wedge to the front in order to give me a flat spot to mount a retaining tongue.

                          2 part foam to add flotation (you can count the small pours I did), then sanded it flush.

                          A layer of s-glass to seal it all in. You can feel the "weight" of the s-glass and can see why it's much stronger than FG. It certainly can suck up the resin. A little sanding with the bench sander and it's done

                            During the numerous curing times on the hatch, I did some work on the hull...............

                            Attached gluing blocks for the bulkhead The bulkhead will be 2" past the hatch opening. I shouldn't need to locate anything further forward then that.

                            Attached the bulkhead. The radius of the hull made it difficult to get an accurate fit. I got it fairly close and just used the resin/cabosil as a caulking to fill in the rest. It'll be covered in CF later so I was really just concerned with the strength. The four holes should give me more than enough space and angles to do a proper 2 part foam pour. I'll wait 24hrs hours for a full cure before I do and foaming.

                              Hello there, I love the boat. Its one of the nicest looking ones out there. You mentioned that you were glad the cf had scrim in there as you felt you overworked it. What is scrim? I have never heard the word before. Transom looks great and I like the front bulk head. Last question, what is resin with cabosil? your were able to use it as a caulking and that sound like it would be great to have around. Really liking what I have seen so far and look forword to seeing it progress!
