    N2 Hydro Build

Ok so I decided to build a small hydro for N2. I have a 3650 3960kv motor, a spare 1/8" flex shaft, strut that I made a while back esc etc. I downloaded and got printed the 1/16 1958 Ted Jones Classic plan by Garry Finley. I actually started a few weeks ago and am just getting to starting this thread, so I'll post where I'm up to. The frame is balsa but I decided to skin it with 1/32" ply for bit better strength.166.jpg165.jpg170.jpg189.jpg190.jpg

Next pics are ply doublers on transom and right sponson. I've added some 3mm aluminium on the insides for strength and to tap into for mounting.201.jpg202.jpg204.jpg

Last week I glued in the stuffing tube and glassed the inside with fine glass cloth. Today I made new strut and rudder brackets and sorted the steering linkage etc. Next will be mounting the steering servo and motor, may be a couple of weeks away.217.jpg218.jpg220.jpg

A couple more pics of before the stuffing tube went in, and one of the bottom where I put an extra piece of ply to strengthen the motor mount area.

The deck centre went on first, I've put foam in the compartments before skinning. Even if gets holed it's not sinking! (well that's the plan). The motor mount is set up similar to the way my miss elam is. I did this because I like easy fit and removal. Most of the hardware on this boat I've made myself, just my thing!

Ok so I've made up the cowling now, bits of ply and balsa, some cutting and sanding. Next will be a coat of resin over the boat and cowl before final filling sanding and paint.

Ok so it's been a couple of weeks so time for an update. Not much has got done but I'm up to the painting stage. So here's a couple of pics with the first coat of primer on...and then sanded off again! A couple more time and it should be ready for the top coats, hopefully next weekend.

Ok so finally this boat is finished, it has taken three months. It had it's first run today, put it in the water hit the throttle and away it went. Only a small amount of steering trim and it was running straight. It performed great, 7 laps and when it came in temps were all low, no temp gun but guessing under 40 degC by fingerometer. And the holy grail of FE, no water inside. Second run included a barrel roll in chop and ending up upside down, still no water inside! Third run loosened the screws holding the motor to the mount, my bad, should have checked but no damage. All in all I'm very happy with this boat and look forward to racing it later this year. I'll get some on water pics later.
