home brew weed eater first build, all advice will be listened to!

well im building my first hull for a weedeater boat, gonna be designed after a fishing boat really not a speed boat so it will have a little taller sides, scuppers and all that good stuff, waiting to get some materials but i have my transom drawn out, gonna be 15" wide, 73 degrees from the keel with 3" tall sides will be taller in the bow of the boat, gonna put a wheel house on it also, hoping to figure out an easy way to water cool the head to cause i want the engine covered by the deck, have my motor already and getting a strut and dual rudder setup from h2o1 this friday, just gotta figure out the other parts i will need to complete the drive train, i have flex cable already to

Most planing mono hulls want a CoG about 30% of the hulls length forward of the transom, if it is a displacement hull you may want it further forward around 40% maybe but displacement hulls aren't my thing. I am struggling with your description, fishing boats round here are all round bottomed displacement boats, but you give an angle from the keel which suggests a V hull, but 73 degrees from the keel seems like a knife blade and a wave piercing hull not a planing hull. a picture of the transom would help as would other bulkheads and there positions if you have more. What style of hull is it, displacement, semi planing, planing or wave piercing?

What drive do you want, surface or submerged? I've never built a weedeater boatbut I would guess for a surface drive planing boat if you put the engine at about 50% and all the rest of the gear behind it you should be able to get there. If it is a submerged drive planing boat you may need the motor further forward, about 60% in order to get the prop onto the CoG at 30% keeping a reasonable drive angle, and put everything else right at the back to balance it. If it is a round bottomed displacement boat put the engine at the lowest point for stability, and the rudder just behind the prop for low speed manouvering.

The best thing to do is build the hull then put all the bits in and shift them around until it balances in the right place, for a planing boat, or if it is a displacement boat build the boat then put all the puts in, put it in the bath then move everything around until it floats with the waterline level.

Jim's boat dock is a forum for petrol/gas RC boats and they probably have many threads and FAQs about using weedeater engines in model boats.

well depends on wich way you pull the angel, it could also be 17 degrees, its not steep, i do want it to handle the waves though, thanks for the reply paul, i appriciate all the advice i can get

Is that 17 degrees each side of horizontal or 17 degrees total from one side to the other, one is shallower than average and the other a little deeper, the deeper the V (more angle) the better it will handle rough water, the shallower the V the faster it will be in calm water, what drive system do you want, submerged drive seems to suit shallower Vs better and surface drives a deeper V.

lol looks like ill be getting the oppisite of what i want then lol, its a pretty shallow v, but its big, comes out to 51" long and 15" wide, and im getting a strut and rudder combo mailed to me soon, i think its probably gonna be a real close to surface mount, i guess i could come out of the bottom of the hull with the flex shaft and make the strut lower but i figured it would be easier on the flex shaft and all just coming out of the bottom of the v, not shure ive never set up a boat! the hull is done enough i could float test it now to see where it will sit, i dont think its gonna draw to mush water though even with all the wieght in it just cause of its shear size! it dont need to be a speed demon i just wanna have fun with it in the waves! im also trying to figure out what the rubber motor mounts are called or a link mabey? tryin to get everything figured out

The bottom of your nice build looks like a crackerbox so I don't think it will like waves.any pics of the botton and transon to give you more set up's details? Thanks for sharing Gill

i was thinking about adding some rolling shocks onto it for more stability, ive seen them on lots of fishing boats around here

I would go with a X472 to start. Gill
