How to: marinising a HiModel GX200Amp ESC by Tyler

Got my HiModel ESC a while ago, and have finally got round to marinising it.

I made a cooliong plate out of 1/32" brass sheet, 7/32 brass channel, and 5/32 brass tubing.

Then i "Glued" it to the top layer of FETs on the ESC, using titan nano thermal grease from DSE.

Tomorow night i will cover the WHOLE thing in DP270(electrical potting epoxy) like you do a reciever.

    Tyler.

    Hi Tyler,
Looks good, but a fan would have been much easier and does the job better IMO
Here's a thread on coating it in epoxy, Please read before you do it..

LOl...that's my thread and I'm still undecided if I want to simply go with a fan and the best waterproofing job I can hope for in my hull or use the DP270 and soak the esc in it ....
      decisions... decisions ....

Hi heath, the fan may work just as well but before i tore into this i was talking with ray and getting his advice. He said they just grind the original heatsink to put tubes in, but i wanted to make my own cooling jacket/plate. It will have heaps of thermal mass which was what i wanted. With the big mass of water in it as well it should move the heat well. I'm not a big fan(no pun. int.) of moving things like fans in my hulls. I will lighly coat it in DP270 and heat it like andy recomends to waterproof it.

Looking at your picture you seem to have cooling only at the top. The bottom fets will still produce considerable heat and in this case i think fan cooling is a better option.

I would have preferred to be able to cool the other layers of FETs but because there sandwiched to the next board with thermal tape, its not possible. On the bottom of the bottom board there are no fets to cool.

IMO that would be kind of a waste to make a cooling plate that doesnt contact all the FETs. to me its a source of possible leaks and extra weight. use the brass to make a screen for a cooling fan.

Each to his own methods however.

                Indeed.
Guys are using these esc's with 1521's cooled similarly to mine with no problems, so i'm happy.
One thing i will do differently next time is use heatsink rtv compound instead of thermal grease, much easier when it comes time to seal it up
The fets on the 2 lower boards are pushed up against the other boards with thin thermal tape, which means you cant get cooling plates in between.
A fan will circulate air around, but thats not much use if your going to seal up the esc

                Tyler.

Reddy made a good point about the south having alot hotter water temp and he's right. I fan cooled my turnigy and It works very well on 4s with temps In the 90s.
