    Just My 2cent worth:
    You could trim the top metal way back to save weight and cut down on bulk. Just having a small portion of the angle on top would give it plenty of strength. The same principal as drilling lots of holes.
    I think it's totally kewl that you are fabricating parts !!! This is my passion even if the part costs twice as much to make.

      . That's what I thought as I walked out of the hardware store after spending $ 18.00 for a 36 " piece of aluminum stock that I needed about 3-1/4 "
      to make the part. Plus, stainless bolts & aircraft nuts ain't cheap either ! Did get to spend some quality time with my drill press, 'tho

          That was my plan,but have to wait till monday when i'm back in the workshop.I was going to drill holes in the top with my press but i think cutting the top back will look much better..
