    HobbyKing Pod Racer

After the early demise of my HK rigger I decided to forward the electrics into the HK Pod Racer. Im going to try a different motor at first for more speed.

This hull at first glance appears to be a knock off of the Tenshock Mini-Y but I think it just looks similar and maybe some of the key dimensions may be the same. It for SURE is not an exact copy. The pods up front are a lot larger in person than one would think by the pictures... The Y arms are much wired than the Tenshock. The bottom skis stop at the rear... I had it out with Hobby King as well as the hatch for this boat didnt fit at all. Its warped every which way and impossible to tape down securely. A new one is being dispatched to me after a fight with HK. Overall the boat aint horrible, just not what I was expecting. THe main hulls finish inst the best, not very smooth. But its solid and doesnt leak, passed bath tub test.

    Build:
HK Pod Racer hull ($66 shipped)
    Turnigy 450/500 h2223 3500kv 600W outrunner ($14)
    Backup- ADS XL400 3300kv 567W water cooled outrunner ($40)
    Kintec small hydro strut ($16)
HK small rudder (look for a better one)
    Octura 3/16" to 1/8" X .130 cable
    CNC 32mm X 1.7p prop

The stock HK Pod racer prebuilt & the Tenshock Mini-Y both have the motor on the starboard side and the rudder on the port. My Climate Blizzard has the rudder on the port as well.

Looking at the JAE's the rudder is on the starboard.

Will I get any negative effect by putting the motor on the port and rudder on the starboard?

One issue with having the rudder on the port side is during the turn I will get to close to the prop (If I turn to tight) and break the water right at the prop. The previous rigger I had the rudder positioned over as far as possible.

Try this battery position in reply to your PM battery question. Mine is stock (RTR) and I have not done anything on it as yet. You have more options since you got the bare hull. If you match how a Tenshock Starship is configured you should be fine, even though the two hulls are not a huge difference in size from each other.

Did you move the motor mount on yours? In the pictures on HK the motor mount appears to be about 1/2" before the front of hull. Yours is considerably further back.

Im looking to mount mine about 6 3/8" from transom on the left (port) side.

Im mounting hardware right now :)

Mine is RTR. That is a pic of someone else's setup that I posted to help you have a setup point.

I got the hardware on the back. Now to figure out where to put the servo and how to mount it. The hull came with a flat piece of fiberglass to put across the hull in back and then zip tie a servo to. I have a small servo that will work for this, but Im not sure its got the power to steer the boat at higher speeds. So Im going to stick with the metal gear workhorse that came out of the HK wooden rigger for this boat.

HK and HOR have some neat rudders that are much nicer than that HK one.

What I hate is the lack of brass insert in that hk rudder.

The Tenshock is shorter but the hull looks MUCH nicer design.

Im not a fan of this HK Pod Racer. Was rather disappointed when I pulled it out of the box. However its here and its cheaper to build it then to buy another hull and throw this one out...

My replacement hatch was shipped on 1/9 so hopefully it will be here early Feb. Im strongly debating a different motor for this. I need a standard shaft size 3mm, 1/8 (3.17mm) or 5mm. No oddballs.

Any suggestions? Im looking to end in the 43-44K RPM range. I want this thing to sing me a song like my Blizzard Rigger.

                        This looks nice from Steve: LBP2845/2Y 4420KV 58A http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...o-2845&cat=123

Run it on 2S for sport, 3S to get your requested rpm.

BTW, 4mm shaft is not oddball. They make 4mm (AKA .150") to 1/8" flex couplers, maybe even Steve? Haven't looked.

HK sells the Tenshock motor in 3800kv http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...or_3800Kv.html Odd shaft though... Sorry.

This is 4000kv I believe and 22mm x 32mm and has a best offer. The shaft is 1/8" buuut, you'd have to buy a cooler from them or make one from scratch or out of a cooler for 20mm motor and bore it out somehow??
