Outrigger twin "On a budget"

I've seen a few guys talking about building on a budget so i thought I'd give it a shot. The electronics are some left overs I had laying around prolly about $50 new. At this point I have spent $13 at the local arts and crafts store. I picked up a design for a scratch built 21 rigger online for free, scale 'em down and increased the width of the tub and the width of the sponsons. Most of what I have so far has all been built in the last few hours. I've never scratch built an outrigger before but I have owned a few SGX's. I plan to make all the hardware myself but I just might pick up a used rudder if anyone has one that'll work nice. The tub is made from bass wood but will be sheeted in ply w/ one layer of CF cloth for the bottom sheeting to help support the driveline. The transom will be layered with 1/8" ply, 1/4 bass then CF plate on the exterior. for this build it looks as though the props will be the most expensive part. Planning to use some 1/8" x430's detounged & 3.2 cup from Andy B.

Any advice/suggestions is always welcome.

I would wrap the CF up the sides of the tub and over the as much as you can to take the extra twisting loads the wide tub is going to see.
Twist is one reason the twin Nitro wood riggers break right by the motor mounts.
I would also swap the thicker sponson tube/rod to the rear over the step, this takes almost all the ride load and all the TF load.

yeah the rear sponson tube was just used for mock up. It's what I had laying around. I plan to pick up some larger tube all around if I can find some at the hobby store here. Thanks for the advice.

it sounds like you've scratch built a few outriggers. This experiment is just to see if it's something I can get into. This one started out as a weekend build using mainly what I have on hand. But the more I get into it, the more I want to do it right. I'm a firm believer in "if you're gonna do it, do it right". On this build I decided to skip the CF reinforcing and I just added some 3/32 ply to the inside and outside of the tub. THanks again for the advice. If ya don't mind, I may contact you for some outrigger consulting whenever I get the itch to build a larger rigger, this one is about 16" long... tiny. micro rigger i guess.

Not a problem, just reinforce the bottom inside corner joint with medium CA in a fillet.

i built a cat once for about 15 dollars in balsa. wish i had known enough to use ply instead. it ran great for about 20 runs, till it got water inside and that was the end. oh well

Here is an idea for your motor mount. This is two Zippkit mounts tied together but something similar could be made fairly easy.

That's prolly all I'll get outta mine. One blow over and it'll be down to davy jones locker. But it's really just a fun build I may never even run the thing. Balsa used in the appropriate way can work good on boats atleast that's what cigarette racing boats are built with for weight reduction.

I'm drawing up somehting in CAD right now. It's very simple just a rectangular CF plate that'll be glassed in place
