Slick Trick 25" Vintage Gasser Goes FE

Ok, so I haven't actually gotten the hull yet, but I thought I'd start a thread now.
Not really sure how I'll put her together yet either.
    Here's the boat: http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...-with-hardware

I plan to use AQ 1800/60A/4S at this point because that's what I have and it seems to work well in my other 24" semi flat V: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_nsCylN5mQ&feature=plcp this video was with a Fiego 10l, but I have since toned out down with an AQ1800

I sure would be interested in some history on this hull, a search on the Googles didn't net much.
Also, as usual your thoughts on setup would also be greatly appreciated.
If anyone has video or pics of this hull I would sure like to see that too!

Not sure what I'm going to do for a hatch, any ideas that would look period on this cool *as hull? :)

    Thanks!
    Corey

What I had planned to do was using a block of balsa shape it to the curve of the front of the opening. After fitting it was going to cover the balsa with epoxy diluted with denatured alcohol 25% using a brush. 2 coats. Then carve a slot into the balsa that fit the curve of the 1/2" lip on the deck that surrounds the deck. Cut a piece of plexiglass to fit the curve of in the balsa and the 1/2" lip tape it all down and u r ready to go. Where the notch u cut in the balsa go back and treat the slot with epoxy/denatured alcohol too. You will be quite surprised how tough the covered balsa is.

I bet that will make a lot more sense when I have the boat in my hands
      Hard to interpret by pictures...
I'm hoping to learn the year and builder of the boat. I'm guessing the name Vern Schmidt had something to do with this hull.

I'm looking forward to working on her...
      Thanks!

        JVS
        John and Vern Schmidt.
boat looks to be about circa mid 1970's, 1980ish.
most, if not all his boats were done in metal flake unless you ordered other wise.

I used to run his Claimjumper sport hydros. I ran in 40 and 60 hydro using OPS and K&B motors.

I know when Vern passed that some of the molds made their way to Florida and from there, heaven only knows.

They also had some pretty neat Off Shore Cats in sizes from 20 to 60 nitro sized.
If memory serves, all his hulls were done up in Epoxy, Gel Coated in the mold naturally.

Been a LONG time since I have seen one of his hulls and that one brings back a lot of memories for sure.

          Thanks for the information!
If this boat is layed up anything like the mid 70's sailboats I've owned, it's probably built like a brick s*%t-house!

Were these boats run open-hatch with the gas motors?

          Again, thanks for the info,
          Corey

                Turn fins or Skeg?

Don"t know where to go with this hull....has a semi-v bow but totally flat-bottom stern.

                Whattaya think?

Turn fins. I never saw that boat run with a skeg, never. The turn fins is something u will need to play with because it will probably need larger than u may think.

Turn Fins, Trim Tabs, Drive Shaft Tube installed this weekend....waiting for the epoxy to set a bit before I pull the tape. Shimmed rails with solid mahogony to adapt to stock Sv27 mount. 5/32" transom doubled and 1/16" aluminum backing plate for strut. Opened up bow seam resealed with West Systems.

Still pondering the hatch....I really want to build a scale looking 70's drag cover, just got to work out the details.
I hope to test run next weekend, likely without the hatch complete, will roll film.

JVS built a very sturdy, finely finished little boat. Would be hard pressed to find such workmanship today. You have done that little fellow justice with ur work. VERY NICE!

Servo mounted and cover made, wokring on a scale looking mock-up motor but for now the cover is clear. I enjoyed working with the acrylic cover and a heat gun...not too bad. I will tape up before running.

I decided to part from normal v-hull convention and run strut instead of stinger...have to see what happens. Also decided to do an inline rudder after wathching the Thai drag boats. Again, will see what happens on the water :)

Here's some pictures of the progress...this has been very fun!

OH MY!! U have done that little boat justice! What a super nice look and great workmanship. I will tell u after playing with it u will be able to move the stuffing tube up some possibly until only a dollar bill or so will fit between it and the bottom. I remember on my larger one I had a cmb 21 in it and in the final adjustments it was near that, ie 1/16 of an inch or so off the bottom of the boat. That will allow the use of larger props too. Boy cannot wait to see it run. Remember now very low lift props on this not a conventional deep vee prop. Wow lots of old memories coming back. I LOVE IT!

                              Thanks Curt!

You know, I was thinkinging the strut would need to move up...I'll tuck it up a bit further before the maiden voyage...thanks for the tip.
I'm starting out with a 42mm carbon prop but that might be too much lift. I was hoping to sort out the water cooling and run today but the rain might foil those plans. When I do get her wet, I'll shoot some video.

Do you have any prop recommendations?
