    First Build

    figured it was about time i posted picts of my first FE build;

    Doug Forresters Hyrdomite

    Length: 17'
    Beam: 9'
Motor: Align 3550Kv (i think it is a 450 size)
ESC: No name brand maybe 30Amp (possibly not enough Amp's)
Battery: 3s Lipo at 20c discharge
    Prop: x431
Running Gear : 0.98 flex cable all home made struts etc

i have run it a fair bit, find that it runs for maybe 2mins and then is intermittant, and if i reset the esc by pulling back on the stick it goes again?? but apart from that no leaks and it runs at about 30mph....then flips if it is not smooth water. If someone has an idea about why it cuts out i'd love a solution??

    cheers

    Hi Eggo,

I expect your own suggestion will be the answer; the ESC is rather on the edge as current draw is concerned, most likely it shuts down thermally.

Was the watercooling on the ESC stock, or did you put it on?

If it came stock with cooling, the 30A is definately too small.

Have you tried a smaller prop to see if it cut's out thermal on that one too?

Another thing; did you build the Hydromite as by the plans?
I ask this because it was designed for a 400 brushed motor and the angle of the running surfaces (sponsons) are rather steep, to get it on the plane quickly with a relative small motor.
I know of Hydromite builders who have reduced this angle for the more powerfull brushless set-up.
The boat will ride smoother and will handle a bit more chop.

    Regards, Jan.

I too had tried the Aligh 3550 motor but found it to be too much and heated up the motor and batteries to much . Dropped it down to a 2800 Align motor and ran much cooler. I tend to find the higher RPM motors don't have as much tork and can bog down and over heat if you are using to much prop. The 2800 (gold can) motor was just as fast with cooler running and longer run times as well.

-E-flite 40 ESC (watter cooled it) with Rc Hydros PiStix Adapter
      -2800KV gold can motor
      - 3 cell 2100 Thunderpower
-Octura rudder and stand off with home made strut
      -Octura x430 prop

            hey jan

i did reduce the angle slightly but maybe not enough it definately is touchy to handle. thanks for the input taken on board !

            cheers

It handles good ... I would estimate high 20's to low 30's but there again I'm a bad judgment for speed . low 30's is quite fast for it size and weight. Any faster and I think you will have a hard time keeping it on the water. I would still like to play around with the settings a little more, maybe strut angle and prop but over all I am very happy with it. Good job on your first build by the way.
