Volvo Bat boat ( Graupner B-24)

    Just got a Graupner B-24

Also know as the Volvo Bat boat

this kit has been around for years and i look forward to sticking a brushless in it.

Ive considered a strut drive and also outboard.

Ordered both from Ebay so will get some pics of each on the back when i get them

Figuring out this drive train stuff is bit confusing for a boat building noob

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

i have a strut and rudder set up with a 4mm flex shaft.

its a very well machined set up but i reckon ill have to space it around 1.5" away from the transom so i can adjust the strut.

should i to mount the strut so that the shaft is in line with the bottom of the boat ???

finally making some headway with this project.

decided to convert the rudder / drive into a stern drive using the flex shaft.

i simply bolted the drive leg into the rudder stock which will also let me adjust the drive angle and height.

Reckon ill need a fairly powerful servo to turn this set up but at least it wont have to move far.

Ive also positioned the motor roughly where i want it. its a turnigy 2000kv that weighs 550 grams so it probably weighs twice as much as the hull!

With this stern drive set up and the over the top motor im going to double skin the inside of the hull with 3 or 4 layers of carbon fibre from the 1st step back.

particularly on the transom which will be under a lot of stress with the stern drive

Never seen a setup like that before...............are you gonna have that much flex sticking out of the transom????

yep, its pretty stiff but ill bulk up the transom and put some strengthening bars onto the end of the drive.

got the idea from my mini V. could have used a UJ but i dont want too many joints in the drive as thats where i think it would break.

this will also let me play with the trim and not have to worry too much about alignment.

Knowing my luck however its probably too much stress for the shaft and itll blow up spectacularly!!!

all part of the learning process!

You can actually use a longer teflon tube and have it go all the way into the strut..........this will help keep it greased up for a run.

thats a very helpful picture. cheers for finding it.

i searched for an hour looking for something like that and couldnt find anything so i just did it!

ive got another tube and liner on there way. i was afraid i made a mistake on my first one but its ok.

i will definately run the teflon into the strut. makes sense.......

My first attempt at using carbon fibre was a complete and utter disaster but at least ill know the shaft, motor mount and servo mount will never move or break in this lifetime!!!

The out side of the boat is taking shape nicely turn fins fitted along with the drive and steering all ready to go

all im waiting for now is some hatch tape and to figure out how to secure this flimsy hatch design.

Ill also be painting the boat in the volvo colours
