    1/10th Scale 1967 Parco O-Rings Miss Restoration

As promised... Here is the restoration work progressing on my 1967 Parco O-Rings Miss 1/10th Scale that I purchased from Brent Hall (first picture), who purchased it from Kevin Humphrey, who purchased it from Jeff Howard, who built it and used to race it with Classic Thunder!

Jeff is a MASTER builder, and the hull construction is top-notch, and VERY strudy, especially considering how LIGHT, LIGHT, LIGHT this hull is. In one it it's last outtings, it apperently had a run-in with a dock, so it had some impact damage on the right sponson/deck. I have that all fixed now, and am just spending some time with sanding, and filling, and sanding, and filling, and sanding... and filling... my FAVORITE PART!

Once I get it close to my liking, which will NOT be perfect... let's face it... these old boats were NOT glossy show pieces in real life... they were wood boats... painted with brushed on paint... and were RACED by mechanics with GREASY HANDS, running old WWII motors that spit soot and oil and fuel all over the place... so getting it PERFECT really wouldn't be SCALE now, would it??

Once I get the base finished to my liking... I'll start shooting on the paint and make some new graphics for it. Jeff sent me the graphics files, which he made. They are a little rough (large pixels), so I may spend some time zoomed in in a Paint program or something like that to see if I can sharpen them up, but otherwise, they are all there.

Would REALLY like to find good pics of this hull from 1969, as it had a reversed color scheme what I like better, but in lieu of finding those, I'll stick with the 1967 theme... The paint colors are standard Duplicolor colors, so they are easy to find, paint, and touch up...

    Here we go!!

Here is a picture of the 1969 boat. I really like the reversed color scheme and the lighter colors... looks like a "happier" boat!

If I could find a couple more pics, I may go this route...

As a little history, I've attached some other boats that this boat was made into over the years...

Major body work completed and first coat of hi-build primer sprayed. Surface is VERY close to being true. A little more filling and sanding and it'll be ready for final prep for paint.

Jim Clark is helping me out by taking the .bmp graphics I got with the boat from the builder and is converting them and improving their quality so I can have MonoJeff make me some proper graphics. Very excited about that!!

            Jeff,

Thanks... I'm looking forward to having some nice graphics for this boat. Hopefully I can get the paint up to par to do them justice!

Spent more time filling and sanding this weekend. Thought I'd have the final build-primer coat on yesterday, but naturally, I found a couple of additional flaws I hadn't seen previously, so I had to fill those last night. Maybe today I'll have her in full primer and ready to start base coating... Going to pick up some white primer and the white base coat tonight. I'm going to shoot the whole thing white, and then hopefully be able to mask off the white areas and paint the blue without the masking tape pulling off the white! I haven't had good luck with that at times in the past, but I'm prepping better these days, and think I may have figured out the routine. Sucks when you spend so much time prepping, just to have your tape pull the paint off!

I'm also never really sure how long to leave the base coat before I start masking for the additional colors... Too soon, and you are pulling off base coat, but too long, and the color coats don't adhere well... or the base color krinkles... UGGGH!

OK, FINALLY figured out the paint system... I've been trying to get the DupliColor Perfect-Match paint to dry in a gloss, but it kept "chalking" up on me... getting all foggy and pastel looking... DUH!! Color coat/Clear Coat dude!!

I laid down the blue on the cowling (test piece), then wet-sanded it with 600, wiped with alcohol, and laid down a coat of Duplicolor Perfect-Match Clear Top Coat... PERFECT!!

Now that I know what needs to be done... the rest should come together nicely. Hoping to shoot the hull by this weekend...
