    Electrified x 4 build

My 10 year old son, 11 year old neighbor, my 12 year old daughter and myself started building 4 Electrified monos today.

We are building from kits I made ~10 years ago. Bulkheads precut out by me and all parts in wood transportation boxes.

In the background you can sorta see the 4 hour video I made explaining how I built one 10 years ago.

Well we got a lot done today. Ready to put the skins on.

My daughter just got back from soccer practice and did not want to be seen.

If internals means electronics, still trying to determine. I ran a 19T with 7 cell nicad and 35 amp ESC back then. Would like to try modern brushless but cheap.

This is a boat design that was in an old (12years?) rc boat mag. Lots of people seem to have built it back then.

This is a 6-cell-class, fast electric monohull; an easy-to-build, high-performance boat that uses balsa and plywood for construction. The hardware shown on

We have glued on the bottoms and sides, cut off the overhanging plys and sanded the edges smooth. I had to do most of the work though because they have a hard time getting the crazy glue in the inside and the cutting of the overhanging plys are a bit tough.

Hopefully tomorrow we can get the insides waterproofed, add flotation and get the top on.

Do you guys coat the exterior of your wood boats with epoxy or fiberglass resin? My 10 year old boat is opening a bit at the seams and letting water in. Wood moves over time. Even thinking about a very thin layer of fiberglass on the exterior seams. Just worried about adding weight.

Most people with wood boats coat with fiberglass resin, and occasionally add fiberglass. the only problem about F/G is that the weave must be filled in order to make the bottom smooth, although some people go with a rough bottom, the fight is still continuing.

My neighbor found a kit of "git-rot" in his basement. Stuff is $50 for a 16 oz. kit. From what I can tell it is a thin epoxy that is used to penetrate dried, rotted wood to harden it. It actually sounds perfect for coating the boat.

I made up 2 samples on ply tonight. One by instructions and one with a little lacquer thinner to thin it. Will check tomorrow to see which is better.

Think I will skip the fiberglass mat. Want to keep boat light.

Its been about 18 hours and it looks to be getting hard.

We already bought some a qt of new stuff but maybe we can take it back or at least not open the can to increase shelf life.

see how it ends up, you may still want the new stuff. Getting the perfect stuff shouldn't be a problem unless you are going in excess of 70mph.

Well I messed up slightly. Before we went on vacation last week I put on a coat of he new polyester resin. It is still slightly sticky today. In looking on the net it looks like what I bought did not have some kind of wax in it that flows to the surface and allows the surface to harden. Used to allow more layers.

So I need to put on another coat. I went to the auto store chain and bought the bondo brand which looks like it is made to harden up all the way.

is it blue? if so, it does harden up almost all the way, still a little tacky until about a week after, nothing too bad though.

nope, all were clear. But the new Bondo stuff worked great. Has a smooth waxy feeling within 1 hour. All ready for some sanding and then primer.
