So how's this for resurrecting an old thread?? Yeah I know the last post was 3 years ago but things come full circle sometimes. Some of you may remember I sold this boat basically ready for paint to finance repairs on some of my stuff that got torn up at the Nats. It got resold and the new owner sent it out to be painted up as the Miss Red Dot. While sitting home this past winter on the mend from just having shoulder surgery the boat surfaced on the Christmas giveaway page and I was lucky enough to be right there when it got listed and I said I'd like to see it come back home. Once the boat got here as pretty as she was I quickly realized the the paint layout was incorrect and the graphics placement was also quite wrong. The scale class is all about correctly duplicating the real ones and for those who know me well it meant she was heading for a redo once I was fully healed up (rotator cuff surgery is a SLOW mend) and it finally hit the work table last week. I will be updating the picture album with the rework of this boat which will now be the 2008 U-7 Formula Boats as it ran in Evansville.

My apologies to those who've been asking as I had planned on being well into the repainting by now, it seems stripping it down turned into far more than it should have. The paint job was so thick that I had to resort to using a chemical paint stripper, something I've never done before. Even after that it's been more wet sanding than I've ever done on a refinish. It would not surprise me if this boat had picked up and extra pound or better due to how much paint (base, colors, clear) was on it. I hope to shoot a coat of primer/surfacer tomorrow and then begin getting it ready (again) for the PPG epoxy primer.

And now we start heading down the road to recovery. First coat of PPG DZ-3 primer/surfacer is on. After all the minor and now visible surface nicks and such are filled in about 95% of this will be sanded off. Primer/surfacer is extremely heavy and not something you want as a full on base primer.

After filling in larger imperfections and sanding down most of the first run of the DZ-3 the second application of the primer/surfacer is now applied. A couple very minor spots to hit with spot/scratch filler and then wet sand most off to get it ready for the white epoxy primer.
