Hello everybody, I am a huge gearhead and motorsports junkie, but I am new here.
I've been in R/C for a pile o' years with dozens of builds under my belt. I recently had the opportunity to trade my brushless Traxxas TRX-3 for a Miss Budweiser 1/12 top fuel hydro. The nitro motor that was in it was junk but the rest of the hydro was in good condition.
I decided to do a brushless conversion and make her stupid fast. I've never done a watercraft conversion before, so I figured it's about time. I was hoping you guys could help me out with a lil' wisdom and advice.
I was originally wanting to use a motor in the 2,000kv - 3,000kv range to get some serious rpm speed, but still have good low end grunt power. From what I've seen most guys like something in the 1,800kv range?. I thought that might sacrifice top end speed ? but have serious low end grunt to get her onto plane ?.
There's a guy on you-tube with a 1/12 bud, running a 1,700kv heli motor with a X447 prop. That thing seems to flat out scream. Does anyone have any suggestions on a motor and prop setup for hi speed running ?. I just dont know how much is to much for this hydro, I don't want to go so fast that I am outta control. I've been known to make that mistake with my 1/10 & 1/8 trucks and buggies.
Another question I had is the turning fin(s), would it be ok to fabricate new turning fins ?, maybe a lil' longer but run 2, 1 on each side ?. I would like to do more than right turns, I just want to avoid creating something that flips over all the time.
How exactly does the flex shaft work ?. She still has the dog bone drive shaft, I am not sure what size the dog bone is, 3.5mm I think. Do I need a flex shaft the same diameter and length as the dog bone ?.
I am planning on running either 2 nimh packs in series, about 6,000mah - 7,000mah or a nice li-ion pack, I've never been a lipo fan, seems too unstable sometimes, don't want to melt the bud if one pops.
Any help would be much appreciated. There are several of you guys who have gone this route already, I am really impressed with what I've seen so far. Thanks in advance !!!!
