    dont use silicone!!

i see alot of guys talking about using silicone to seal stuff up. silicone and paint dont mix, and no matter how much you think youve got it all out before paint, usually its already contaminated everything and making painting a real PITA. try plumbers putty or automotive strip caulk, or even vinyl adhesive caulk like phenoseal (its paintable). anything but silicone please. thanks

More like don't use it at all. Even the fumes from silicone can contaminate and make any painting down the road troublesome. Why not just use something else....

Is it ok if I use WD-40 to coat and protect my hull prior to paint?

WD-40 doesn't have any silicone in it - but be my guest.

right you are haha wd-40 can be cleaned off and wont affect paint. silicone is really the only thing that cant be cleaned, for some reason it just wont come off fully and almost always causes fisheyes.

I don't understand this, surely you fit your hardware and seal it (with silicone or otherwise) after you have painted the hull? I have sealed my hardware holes after painting with acid free electronic grade silicone for years without any ill effect, maybe if i used regular silicone it would eat the paint but it sounds like your talking about painting over the silicone and I just don't see why anyone would want to whether it worked or not, I've only ever seen one boat with painted hardware.

Ive also never had any problems sealing things with electronics grade silicon, As stated you wouldnt use silicon to seal before painting any way. You also shouldnt use the acid based silicon near any model boat because of the corrosion ecspecially on any electronics in the boat. This stuff will attack things in a sealed boat even after its set or gone off, Nasty stuff. Martin.

Sometimes the boats switch hands and the next guy wants to change the color. Now it's contaminated with silicone and painting is a real pain. Why not just use something that doesn't contain silicone

Because i think it does the job of sealing better than any thing ive certainly tried, A whats paramount to me is keeping water out 100%. Surly if your going to repaint a hull your going to remove all the hardware & traces of silcon when prepping for a repaint. Martin.

Martin, vinyl based Products have the same consistency as the silicone ones. The silicone doesn't make the seal any better. And no, you can't remove all traces of silicone but w/e, do what you like. I will say I'm a ppg certified painter, and paint between 4 and 5 cars daily, so I do have ALOT of knowledge about paint. Silicone is the enemy and is NEVER used in the shop. I don't use silicone on any of my boats and they're all 100% waterproof.

I don't use ANYTHING to seal my hardware. And it doesn't leak either.

                              close call

dana you may have saved me some serious greif with one of my projects. I was gifted a 44" long thick abs mono. I got it in 2 pcs with the deck and hull seperated. I pulled the 30cc homelite out of it and started cleaning it up and thinking of how I was going to paint it. The entire joint that was between the hull and deck was white silicone. Still a lot of it there too. I may just go with a river rat rod theme now. just have some fun with it. Vinyl graphics or ??
