Mono~E~Mono: Building a pair of *Bling Rockets*...

My son and I have been working on our new Bling Rockets for the last couple nights. We just received them from fightercatracing.com . He is learning everything, from how to read a tape measure (which turns into a sidebar math discussion), to laying carbon fiber, drilling holes, learning why the COG is important on a boat, assembling, ect. Things tend to go a lot slower this way, for example we spent last night assembling our motor mounts and motors, finding and marking 30% for desired starting COG, and putting our gear in the boats to figure out where we want to mount it.

Tonight we layed carbon fiber/kevlar in the bottom of the hulls. I must say Elijah did pretty well. I cut his peice a bit small so at the right angle you can see the end of the cloth on the sides, but we will either be painting that small area black or adding some black tape or something to hide it before we're done. All in all, its the best CF work I've seen from a 10 year old (Is it fair that its the only CF work I've seen from a 10 y/o?)

I'll post pics soon (have to use my wife's camera, someone broke mine )

Power setups planned are as follows:

    Elijah's Rocket:

    - Motor: 1600kv 1500watt outrunner

    - Esc: Swordfish 120A

    - Batteries: (2) 3000mah 6 cell nihm, in series

    - Prop: 40mm plastic

    Keith's Rocket:

    - Motor: 2200kv 1500watt outrunner

    - Esc: Scorpion water-cooled commander 120

    - Batteries: Single 5000mah 4s

    - Prop: Prather s215

Here's a pic of Elijah's CF/Kevlar job...not too shabby. He did all the sanding, taping, resin application, ect. We will spray some black in the front and upper sides to make it all blend in and look classy.

Here are a couple pics of my bling rocket. Carbon fiber/Kevlar from the same roll. Only difference is mine is 2 layers and E's is 1. 1 would probably have been fine but I didnt like how my first layer looked so I went ahead and did a second. This is the first time Ive ever done "wet-on-wet" carbon fiber layers. Hopefully there are no ill effects once it has completely set (bubbles, ect.)

Oh, I almost forgot...In an effort to make this thread more entertaining, planned speed for these boats will be around 130mph.

130mph. Now that's moving! I'll be sure to tell everyone about your speed goal so you get a 4 page thread in a couple days.
Looks good, Keith. I've been thinking about getting one of these hulls. Good luck to you and your boy. I'll be watching your builds.

Anybody got an opinion on the rudder placement on these? I always thought the leading edge of the rudder should be out about as far as the prop, but these rudders dont come off the transom that far. Im wondering how it will effect handling...

I have considered extending the mounts, but I dont really know for sure that I need to yet

Nice build thread! Very cool you are doing it with your son!!

Maybe you could make an extension to the rudder bracket.

It might get twitchy in the corners with rudder to far forward, try it out.
