    P Spec Phil Thomas Stealth

I've put the new Phil Thomas Stealth in the water twice now. Setup for P Spec with UL-1 motor, UL-1 esc, tried with both Turnigy 2 2s 5000 40c and single 4s 5000 40 c Turnigy, Speedmaster hardware, UL-1 fin and home made fin mount.

When mocking up the boat, I realized it would be transom heavy. Mounted everything as far forward as I could. Initial CG was at about 14", quite a bit stern heavy from Phil's recommended 15.5 - 16" mark. Maidened as such and it did not handle right, boat hopped and just flat didn't not perform well. While at the pond, added all the lead weight that I had externally to the sponson tips and brought it to about 14.5" CG from transom. Still never got it to perform well even with adjusting strut height and angle and called it a day.

Put it back on water for our last local club race and added about 8 oz of weight total to the sponson tips. First heat of the day while running behind other boats, blew it over twice, so definitely running too loose. Heat 2 addded about an ounce and unfortunately, pile drove it into a pylon on the first lap and stuck it there. One of our local guys plowed into me on his last lap and unfortunately for him, he hit my fin and it severed his sponson on his Whiplash. Fortunately for me, only bent my fin. I was able to tape up the nose to waterproof, straightened the fin and ran for heat 3. Looks good in the straights as the CG is now at 15.5" (rearmost recommendation from Phil), looks and I say only looks like it runs loose, but no issues with blowing over or anything weird and handles really nice. Top speed is looking good running a stock (balanced and sharpened ABC H5), but turns are not good as I am scrubbing off alot of speed. Initial day of running, scrubbed a tremendous amount of speed, for race day, raised the fin about 1/2" and tilted the bottom forward and that helped alot, but still the boat is losing alot of speed in the turns. Phil let me know of a place that had a Dick Tyndall fin in stock and I just ordered it (totally different fin than the UL-1 fin).

For having no time on this boat I am very encouraged at how it performs and feel confident that it will be a very good contender with the Whiplash and Insane FE30. The construction, roominess and styling of the hull is absolutely awesome and the service and communication I have received from Phil is outstanding.

Gotta get this baby dialed in for the Winter Warmup VII here in AZ which is just around the corner! Can't wait to dial it in and see how she does.

Wow that cg is far foward, In my boats it is any whare from 1.5 to 4 inches behind the sponson. If you have trapped air in the tunnel you can defuse it and stop the blow over. Weight just slows you down.

My cg is at 15.5 inches from transom, black UL-1 fin (thickest), 2-2s 5800 30c Flightmax batteries, M445 prop, Leopard 4074 2200Kv motor. I didn't have to add any weight to mine.
Still dialing it in and have a M545, and M645 prop to try. I just ran out of thawed water last fall. I too am very happy with this boat.
Here is a video of it on its 5th run. (Still was workng on my radio trims and expos.)

My FE-30 has the CG about 2.3" behind the sponsons and runs very well there. A lot depends on the hull - sponson bottom shape, lifting area ahead of the CG, aoa of the tunnel, etc.

Most FE versions of Phil's SS21s that I've seen have the motor much further forward than that of the OP's model, usually with saddle packs either beside the motor or in the sponsons. That allows the CG to be in the right place without adding weight.

IME sometimes weight is necessary to keep a hull on the water at higher speeds, it depends on the lifting characteristics of the particular design. Where needed it certainly does not slow the boat down - boats floating on their deck don't go very fast. Adding a tape air dam can help without adding weight.

Heres my PT Stealth... very similar setup as above with batts ahead of motor... handles like an absolute dream... rumdog built it and set it up.. I've just run it.. heres a quick vid of mine... I was being real real careful as my kayak was already put away and the water was 30 degrees...

Honestly I was being very ginger... rumdog did a great job setting the boat up.. there was a slight chop and I was being hesitant... she does run very nice wide open through the turns... I gps'd it at 58 mph on 4s1p 5000mah with a simple S & B m445 & 4074 2200kv leopard.. I really like this boat...

The pic shows rumdogs two smaller 4s pack setup.. think he was running (2) 3600 mah 4s packs... I run one 4s 40c 5000mah pack...

I run one of Mike's 45 turn fins on my PT45 and it really works nice.

Mike does excellent work. He made a JAE fin for me and two Sundowner fins. Stiff material and VERY sharp!

I do like the PT much better than the Insane. Good thread!

How much is your driveline offset?

Thanks guys. Just got a Virginia Craftsman turn fin and will replace the UL1 fin. Also just received a couple of Turnigy 4s 4000 40c batts and will try that, but of course will have to remove weight from the sponsons. I'm setting up this boat to run boat the P Spec class and P Sport Hydro. I have a Castle 240 and Neu 1415/1Y. So trying to get balanced out using both setups. My thought was to balance at 15.5" on P Spec and 16" on P Sport, figuring with the added speed, might want to be at the front recommended CG point.

Ray, driveline is offset 5/32". When I set up the boat, I set with the rudder perfectly straight. I did not have to put in any trim in the transmitter and the boat has absolutely no prop walk whatsoever.

I'll test again in a couple of weeks after I attend the Arizona Electric Flight Festival and get the hull painted and report back.

Hey, I see someone is having fun with the new boat, I have to get one going too. Good feed back guys, I am always looking for a better setup to make it better.

Ray that boat will be obsolete if you dont get it setup soon. HA
