Nothing wrong with a copy. heck, companies do it all the time, even full size boats. Unless it is something patented....

Besides, just because something is copied in shape, does not mean it is the same. maybe you want a different layup, no longer available, you want to mod it and experiment.... Just because it is the same shape, does not mean it is the same boat. We know some copies are not as good, maybe you want to make a copy and make it better? Anything any of us does is not going to effect thier factory output anyways.

yep. Did the kevlar body to Western Michigan University solar car in 1993.
that was 2 meters x 6 meters. the largest I have done.

You really want to vacuum bag a 1 meter cat? Most people here tell me weight doesn't matter, just add more glass and resin !

what do you want to know?

Hey Brian, I thought you had mentioned you did some. Im not necesarrily doing it for weight, Im more interested in doing it to get the cloth to lay in right. I see what Im going thru on the hatches Im doing and can only imagine how laying up the hull bottom is going to be. I guess Ill just have to use more filler.

Basically I just wanted to know what it takes. Ive dome some research, so I know what materials etc are involved. I just dont know if I want to put the money into it or not.

So, that still brings up a point. If you buy a copied hull and fix it to make it smooth/straight/sharp, then it is an improvement, not a copy.

Yeah, getting cloth to lay into multiple corners is the tough part. Many cats you see the bottom steps have all been filled in with large radius or blending curves with a filler, makes it easier.

For vacuum bagging, you will need a small diaphram pump for creating the vacuum. Everything else you could pretty much make yourself. It has been awhile since I have done it, but I purchased some of the elastic film to try on a small cat. I had that idea back in the 90's but wasn't sure what to use. Latex would stretch, but would I get it to hold to the mold. The films at the time did not stretch much and it was hard to get enough material into the mold to allow it to pull into the corners.

I get most of my stuff from uscomposites.com and have been very happy with the results.

I agree. That was my whole point in the beginning. Not to get bashed on for pulling an exact replica, b/c its getting hacked to make something better.

Thanks Brian. Yeah I have to use filler on my hatches. I went through one "filling" to begin laying up the bottom of the Genesis for the mold and thought I had enough on it. Turns out I still need a lot more. It seems harder to wrap outside corners than inside corners. 4oz glass just will not stay down. Ive got some 2oz, but didnt think Id have to go that light for the first and or second layer. Thats when I started wondering if bagging would be the way to go.

I hope to get some more work done on it tonight. Ive got to lay up a hatch, so I thought I may go back and forth on them. Hopefully I will have some new pics by morning.
