    xxx main ruined my day...

i just wanted to warn everyone that the xxx main masking templates are junk. i am in the process of painting a hull and the stick on mask ruined the whole paint job. the base coat was sprayed, sanded and ready for clear. since this boat is going to be a trailer queen i decided to go with some graphics, ghost flames. i used the xxxmain templates and shot the flames, came out sweet!! only after about 2 minutes i removed the sticker mask and it left sticky glue behind... the only way to get the glue off was to sand the entire area, burning through the base coat and having to essentially start the paint process all over from scratch.

i dont know if i got a old batch of masking stickers or what but needless to say i think this product is JUNK... i will never use xxxmain stickers again.

I've had luck with denatured alcohol getting glue residue off without hurtting the paint job. Just got to make sure you let the paint cure before you try it.

i know i could have waited but the ghost flames were a real light coat of paint. i didnt want to wait just to find out i was going to screw it up anyway.. allready a done deal. it is getting a solid one color paint job... just disapointed that it left glue behind, they were small flames and no way to get in the curves to remove it.

I had this a couple of times and it can be fixed. Just let everything dry properly, then just wipe the glue off with a "label remover". I got an industrial one from Wurth (orange scent :D ) and it will not touch the paint. After that wetsand with a 1000 grit and clear...
Next time just buy yourself a good masking vinyl and cut it... a lot easier. I can send you some basic flame shapes that you can just re size and cut in a sign shop.

That sure is frustrating. Sorry to hear. I had a similar issue on my first cowl, and I was having a bad day already so i kinda threw a tantrum and smashed the cowl. Childish i know.... On the plus side the replacement from aeromarine was cut nicer along the bottom. But, ya I agree on the vinyl if you give it another go. Good luck, post pics..

A lot of what CornelP says sounds right as long as the clear is not affected by the base coat you will put over it. If you are only putting clear over clear it should be no problem.

When I used to use House of color base coats then inner coat clear. I could work it and work it will no peal up, wrinkle or any bad affects.

Lately I have been doing a lot with Dupla Color Paint Shop. It is a lacquer base paint and I am testing the base colors over the clear coat as I write this.
