it works great, i allready have this boat with a ul-1 motor. the way this one is designed the ski adds the lift to the rear. you use a push prop instead of a lifting prop on these. as long as you get the strut flat (notice the non-adjustable strut) they ride at the right angle. also with the ski this boat is not near as sensitive to cog, if anything the faster they are the more weight they like on the rear. i got one of the first batch of the .12 & .21 nitro's as well as one of the first FE's. i was talking to rod g (the designer) quite a bit during the building of them. he gave me alot of insight to this boat. the hull doesnt care about much, the strut can be long or short, ski can be cut flush with the trandsom or left overhanging, weight can be moved around quite a bit, ect.... the only thing they really care about is that the strut is down as low as possable and 90 degrees to the trandsom. i played with the width of the ski a little in the heaver fe 12 and it didnt make that much difference...
ok..... done and ready for the water. i wont be able to run it for about 3 days but will keep you posted. it came in a little heaver than i wanted but i still think it should be ok. finished weight was 5lbs 4oz with 5000mah
Thats exactly what mine weighs with 5000's, and a 1515 1y.
Still goes pretty quick though.
I cant see how it could be much lighter, without using thinner ply...SNAP, CRACKLE, POP.
Looks good man, like to see some vid.
maiden voyage today...... i came home a little disapointed but still happy. things didnt go as well as they could of.
1st run, had a vibration and lost the radio, ran aground about 5mph not under power, minor scratches. this was on the 2nd turn of the 1st lap.
2nd time back in the water, ran good but it is a little wild on this motor. came back cool after 1.5 minutes, all temps under 100 degrees. but the steering needs adjustments, it steers to fast and to far, it was hard to drive. one lap i hit both bouys.
that was the only runs as when things are going like that i just pack it up and go home before something really goes wrong.
i didnt use the eagle tree but my guess is mid 50's, faster than the ul-1 spec one for sure, just have some handling issues to work out. the bottom line is i need a bigger pond to run this thing. i was pretty much going to fast for the pond and no where near flat out and temps under 100. this is one that i will have to take somewhere else... i will run it again and get some numbers soon. has a ton of potental but also a few problems..
ok, went alot better today. got in 2 packs running h-7 and 1450 mods. figured out the handling issues and got it going in the upper 50's to low 60's. it was running good and alot faster than the stock ul-1 motor in the same rigger.
now the bad news, had problems with the esc, doesnt look burnt or smell but it was quiet when i pluged it the third time the beeps were quieter than normal and it didnt seem to have full power... i have a back up so i will send this one to have it checked out and install the spare.
ok got it back out on the water. i pulled the cc240 and put in a mod turnigy 180. i had to remove the heat sink and sealing box on the bottom, i installed a water cooling block from a turnigy 120 (needed inlet and exit on the same side (oppisite the caps)). this made it just enough smaller that i could get it in the hull, otherwise it wouldnt fit. i only ran it for 1 pack with eagle tree. i hit 57 mph and 148 amps with a h7. temps after 2 minutes were: battery 104, motor 114, esc 108 on the hottest part (caps). it was good as it didnt slow much in the turns. the eagle tree rarley went under 40mph and it is tight turns around the bouys in the small pond, it pulls hard out of the corners and is winding out. i didnt run it anymore due to the pond not being big enough. no doubt if i was able to let it run it would be atleast 5mph faster. i will try to get it out to the big pond next weekend
I bought this kit for spec racing and plan to build it over the holidays. I hope it's competitive against the raptor riggers. They seem to be popular too.
BTW Nice looking build
