Prop size? 35 pound scale boat

    Hi,

Hopefully there are some scale guys out there - my friend has a 35 pound scale displacement hull powered by 2 big drill motors and gearboxes - what prop size would be good? We have two 60mm 4 blade Graupner props but I don't know if that will move it...

    Thanks.

We need a little more info.
what voltage are you running? Specs on the motors? Gear ratio? Its hard to tell you if the props will work good without know how fast they will be spinning.

Whew 35 pounds? a true SCALE boat .How many grams are your drill motors?Have you calculated thier kv and any other relevant data like: idle current, max voltage, mae amp draw etc....?How long is the boat? When you say scale do you mean 1/8th scale hydro or a big scale boat like a pt109 or a tug boat or a battleship? What speeds do you expect?
Not saying it cant be done but if its an eighth scale hydro my advice is to shave some weight first coz 35 pounds will be rough on your hardware and equipment. If you still decide to go that route u better have some good stuff. To get a good hv brushed esc you MIGHT still have to go with schultz esc $$$$$.Im a fan of all things electric and you can get some good performance out of brushed/gearbox design but I wouldnt expect it to compete with a properly set up brushed combination. There is also way more choices now with brushless. You cant really find mpu processor based brushed esc's with datalogging and things like that.Like to see the setup. Are the drill motors the big panasonics or dewalts?

        Hi guys,

The only thing I know is that the motors are ran on 12v each and geared down so that the unloaded shaft speed is 550 rpm. We don't need to go fast (2 to 4 mph is fine). I'm not sure if those 60mm props will slip like crazy while trying to get that mass moving.

Might want to look into using trolling motor props. They are 60 to 90mm and were designed for motors running about 500 - 2000rpm.
