So.. if I have the correct graphic files I can take it to one of the local shops and they do the rest. Cool. Now, who can do the drawings?

Testors makes a computer decal system. I haven't tried it myself yet, but I've heard some guys like it. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=TES9198 We carry extra paper for it, etc. (click on Optional Accessories in the top right box). The TES92xx stuff is what you want to look at.

I will let you guys know when the Geico decals are available. It will probably be about the same time as the boat (sometimes they get into the same container, sometimes the next one).

About 6 months ago I had these guys in VA do a set of the old Aqua-Mania Skater for me. I sent them a bunch of pictures I had of the full size boat and they were able to do a descent set up for me. I didn't even have Hi-Rez images. I think it was around $75.00. If you had good Hi-rez photos I bet it would be cheaper.
I needed to give him specific sizes of each decal. Very nice hi quality Vinyl

I used that to make some decals for a Slash body I was doing because there was no way I could mask and paint what I wanted. Printed great, then "painted" them with the coating spray they give. Did the waterslide and they got a little flaky on me after I put them on. They dried more like newspaper after it gets wet not like a shiny finish. So I don't know how well they would hold up on a boat. i guess if you laid some hard core clear over them they would probably be ok. Just not sure I want to be the one to experiment with it lol

Cool. I remember it took him a day to get back to me. I think they only check email once a day. Let us know what he says.
              Thanks,

Easy to do these days Ray with the right equipment. Vinyl Print and Cut machines can do it all.

4 color easy to do and they are photo quality. I have a local fast sign and banner printer here that does them. I plan to get some of my logo decals made from him.

All he need is a decent picture and no problem. PDF or whatever work for him. e-mail to him in the afternoon and pick them up at 5 p.m.

I think they work better than all the paint time. Solid base and do it up...they are also VERY thin...you get one chance.

                    i love vinyl decals

Any proffessional quality vinyl graphics store will sell a waterbased gel or spray gel to adjust graphics before allowing the adhesive to grab. this allows many attempts if you screw up without damaging the surface or the vinyl decal.

It will work with vinyl or any number of decal type medias.

These gels or sprays do not affect adhesion in anyway once the decal is set and squigeed. After 30 minutes or so the decal will be set and then cannot be removed without damaging it. its how the professionals apply them, i use the stuff too in gel form.

                    As an example:
on some of my big graphics i cleaned the surface with soap and water (do not use alcohol) and dry it with a soft lint free rag, i then figure where i will place the decal, slather the gel on thick (like 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep) and plop the decal in the middle of it. i then do some final movement, adj, then press one finger down, carefully make a horizontal press from center, end to end to "lock" the decal in place then using a small rubber roller (again graphics companies sell them, 3 bucks or so) and work my way out from center, at this point the decal is set and in 30 minutes will be non removeable, pinholes can be removed by popping with a new needle exacto, lightly press to relieve the air or gel. Sometimes you can also simply leave small bubbles (1/4) inch and down in the sun and they will dissipate on their own.

Easy stuff. It may seem messy at first but dont let that stop you, the gel cleans up easily and doesnt leave a residue.

So James, which is the correct post, the one with - or without - the following sentence?

My friend has a vinyl graphic shop for the past 15 years he just uses soapy water in a spray bottle. Spray it where he wants the graphic, sticks the vinyl on adjusts it and lets it sit in the sun and it dries out and sticks for good. No special gels or liquids just dish soap and water. I've done it that way for just as long on our cars and when I installed my clear bra it looks perfect.

Thats fine too, but not knowing your friend i would assume he uses only certain types of soap to make his media as some soap types contain lye and other chemicals that will affect the decal over time.

dishwashing detergent and only about 2 drops in a quart spray bottle. Works fine. I've been doing that for at least 30 years. Never a problem.
