After a lengthy conversation w/ Brian, I ordered a pair of Mystery 3000kv Outrunners w/ Escs and I ordered that nice lookin rudder from Jhocheung.
Pretty cool little hull. The pics do not do it justice.
I plan on running it first w/ no hull mods at all. Run exactly how it is. After I get her dialed, I will sharpen the edges etc and see how she goes.Comment

yeah i got that rudder too, it looks great but mine has some drag when i turn it left and right maybe just needs to were in..Comment

Yeah, you gotta be careful asking an engineer to call you and then ask him questions. I have had people at work try to slit thier wrist with a post-it-note just to get out of my office after asking a question during an absent minded moment!
Glad you like the boat, I will get some info posted on drives and get those couplers made for you.
Nice talking to you, BrianComment

Nah I enjoyed it. It was nice picking your brain.
I got the hatch trimmed down to fit nice and flush this am. Now its the "waiting for parts" game.
What size shaft did you say the coupler youre making will go to?Comment

On these small motors and outrunners, I have been using the octura .098 cable.
Steve sells an octura set that includes the cable, teflon liner, drive dog, prop nut and the 1/8" prop shaft bored for the .098 cable for $12. You will need a rh and a LH lay cable. Right now he has the right cable set, but he does not have the left (standard) cable in stock. But I have an idea!
On my next cat project that I hope to start here this weekend or in a few days, I am going to be going twin 1/8" drive also. I have standard LH cable and liner, but no right hand. How about you buy a RH set and send me a chunk of the cable. I will send you a chunk of the standard LH cable. The flex is 24" long I believe, should be plenty for 3 or 4 driveshafts.
You will also need another prop shaft ($2.65) and drive dog ($2.50) from OSE.
Oh, and buy the sleeve retainer glue from OSE also.
Now for drive detail. All I was going to do, is use 3/16 K&S tubing. Run it through the back of the boat all the way up to the motor. Heat it up abotu 3" from the end to remove temper so you can bend it once it is inside the hull. If the 3/16 is not stiff enough to use as the drive stub alone, I was going to epoxy a piece of 7/32 tube over it for extra strength.
Then the teflon liner slides up in the 3/16 tubing for the flex cable. I was going to use a piece of 5/32 brass tubing about 2" long as a bearing for the prop shaft. There are a couple of ways to secure it from riding up into the stuffing tube against the teflon liner also. Just a small dimple punch in the stuffing tube will prevent it from gong further up in, or you can slightly flare the end of the 5/32 bearing piece.
Now, the drive is not adjustable, but not sure that is needed. If needed, you could tweek it a little bit by just bending the 3/16 tube I guess.
So, I am going to make the couplers to fit the mystery outrunners and .098 cable. I make the motor mounts from 1/16 aluminum sheet, bent about 80 degrees as showed in a picture above. I also make the cooling plates for the ESC from 1" x 1/4" aluminum bar stock. If you have the capabilities, makes these little cats pretty cost effective. Given I make my own prop shafts now and I have the flex in stock, I need $40 for motors and ESC's, about $15 for a scale rudder, $5 for cheap small servo, $20 for octura x430 props, and $5 for two drive dogs and some miscellaneous parts or supplies. I figure excluding the hull, I can build a small twin drive brushless cat for under a $100 + radio/batts. Not bad! Get a used radio and two turnigy 3s batteries, you are running for under $150! (*hull not included, some assembly required, engineering degree not included, lathe mill and raw stock may incure extra cost)
The small mystery 3000kv outrunner on 3s and 430 props should push the boat to mid 30's. At 100% it is 52mph, so giving it 65% eff. is 34, 70% is 36 mph. I know that is not a rocket, but mid 30's for a 18.5" mystic doesn't sound bad to me.Comment
