Trying to restore/upgrade my Kyosho Wavemaster!

    Hey Guys,
So i saw this boat on craigslist so i figure why the heck not! i always wanted this boat but since they stop making them years ago they are harder and harder to come by. Pick it up for fairly cheap and it was in decent condition. In the rear the hull seems to be splitting apart and there is a small crack that i'll be fixing with plastic epoxy.

    So my plans:
    Supervee brushless motor
    Supervee ESC
    Octura 640 Prop
Ball bearing upgrade (i dont know the what size they are yet)
Coupler (Some type of coupler to make this work!)

    Here are some pics !

I been boating for awhile and a lurker on this forum for years! lol my building skills are decent, i just need the knowledge and the right direction. so any ideas or tips would be much appreciated!

Here are some pictures of the cracks

I found some this epoxy at the local hardware store. Do you guys think it will work ok or is there a better one for this type of plastic?

Took the outboard unit apart to clean it. The grease in there was super thick and giving it lot of friction!

Got it back together with the supervee stock motor. The shaft on the motor is way thicker then the stock motor and its longer! I'm going have to do some spacing or grinding to get this to work. Do you guys know what coupler I need?

A Coupler from REK, or from Fullers 5mm-1/8" SQ (measure the SQ size first)

          Hey Kris Flynn
When i google kyosho wavemaster i saw your name pop up more then once! even post about the wavemaster dated back in 2002! I'm assuming you had a couple of these wave master's yourself? Where is the best place to get a REK coupler or the Fullers coupler? I don't see it on the offshore store. Also do you think this brushless setup is going to be too much for this dolphin out drive? i also have a rc hydros esc and a brand new Traxxas Titan 12t 550 motor that i could use if the brushless setup was going to blow up the outdrive!

Did some more work today when it was slow at work

epoxy the seam around the boat and the cracks

also made a new radio plate out of abs plastic and reinforce the rear motor mount with some balsa wood.

my back up power source combo if the brushless is going to be too much for the outdrive : (

              Hey,

I never had one of those boat, but I did have that lower unit.

IMO you will kill the whole thing with the BL setup. A MUST is bearings for the prop shaft.

If you are going to get a coupler from REk, do yourself a favour and get a lower unit and parts that he makes also. richard at rekmachine.com

              Cheers
              Kris

okay my plans have change. I decided to go with the rc hydros esc and the traxxas 550 12T motor. I'll save the brushless combo for another project i have lined up.

Any further progress on your Dolphin upgrade? I recently picked up a pair of them. One with, one without the motor. The one lacking the motor is also missing the motor adapter and coupling. I am pretty sure OE has the coupler, but I will probably need to fabricate the adapter plate. I'm also looking into finding a suitable, readily available flex shaft. Either that, or making my own, as I know they're prone to snapping.

Yours looks like the earlier Dolphin - mine are later Dolphin 2s. Since the Dolphin 2 cowlings are quite obviously Mercury influenced, I added some decals that I drew up on the computer. I have a quarter scale kneeler hydro framed up that I plan on running it on. I also have a Graupner GTX 650 that I plan on trying on it, too.

                    Hey Scott.
I been really busy the last couple of days. Leaving the country and going to vietnam but i did manage to sneak in a little bit of time. So I got the Traxxas 550 12T motor mounted and made brush coolers and a cooling coil for it. I also have some bearings that i just order so they should be here when i get back from my trip. I did also read about the flex shaft snapping but we'll see how long it holds up? You should do a dual outboard setup just for scale looks since you have 2 of them! here are some pictures.

I've got a Graupner Speed 600 to go on the one that's missing the motor and I also have some cooling coils on the way. The boat that one of them will go on is a quarter scale kneeler hydro that ought to go well with just one motor on it. No room on the transom for twins, either...
