    stinger position on mono

Well, I haven't had any replies in my build thread, so I thought I'd bring it to general discussion.

What are the philosophies on stinger positioning? (This is the 26" x 6" Aeromarine Laminates Mini xXx Outerlimits hull.)

Q1: what height should the strut be above the bottom of the transom?

This guy has a small ride pad and I would be inclined to place the strut as low as possible. Should I have the strut just below the ride pad?

Q2: Any comments on offset distance? I was planning on going drive dog at 2.6"; any thoughts on this?

Rudder will be as deep and close to the prop w/o interfering with thrust cone, LE @ drive dog. Again, thoughts?

    Thanks for the help,
    J

There are much more qualified folks to offer you advice on a mono setup then me but I have always placed my stingers as low as possible, the logic being reducing wetted surface area and also allowing you to glue down the stuffing tube to the inside of the hull.

I agree John, and that is probably what I will do. I was hoping to get some discussion going about what people have found works best... like having the prop centerline at a certain distance above the vee bottom.

In this case with the small ride pad, would it be best to place the prop center line just at the ride pad surface, so exiting the hull just before the transom?

I put mine up about 2-3mm from the rid pad.

Same here..... it allows the ride pad to do its job.

are you guys talking the centerline of the prop? or the base of the strut? If the centerline, then basically position the strut base AT the ride pad... yes?

I run the strut 2-3 mm above the ride pad. Yhe base of it. You want to let the ride pad do it's job as previously stated, but moving the strut up a tad will let the transom run a tad deeper in the water and will help eliminate chine walk.

if you use a speedmaster stinger they are adjustable in height, start with 2-3mm but if needed can be raised.

Cool, thnks for the reasoning behind the tips. I think the stinger is adjustable, not going with speedmaster, cause I don't want to have to trim it and I found the one I am using for a good price; to me it looks cooler too.

How about placement of turn fins? I usually put them right at the inside angle of the chine... thoughts? I have noticed the real ones are prone to spin outs, pretty scary stuff. Don't want my dudes to be messing in the cabin.

I would run it without turn fins and trim tabs at first to see how she handles and what needs to be corrected.

fair enough. still have 4-5 months to get the paint perfect and mount the stinger/rudder.
