H&M Drifter 36" new lipo setup

Hi, l am looking for a bit of advise on my new project
I bought this last week, second hand and have decided its time for some modern electrics
to send this in to the 60mph+ bracket
but not to sure what way to go I think that I will need a replacement motor I would say that this was a good motor in its day but its brushed so time to move on, the prop is 50 mm im sure that's to big, and maybe a bigger esc turinigy 180A?

I do have a etti 150A ESC I could use out or my storm night eco, I could use for this build I also have 2 x etti 5400mah 7.4v 20c packs, but I was hoping for some serious power so I would expect I would be better on 2x3s 30c but I have no idea I am quit new to this seriously addictive hobby

would this be a good motor choice freaigo 540 xl 8?

    thanks for any advise

    Andy

i think its to big for a 8xl wich would be a 4s motor, you would need somthing like a 12xl on 6s
a 580 l on 6s would be even better, but to safley do 60 mph you may need to look at a neu motor on 6-8s

I tried a feigao 580 8L on 5s in a Maritimo (about same with yours) but motor gets warm-hot (130 dgrees F) quite easily.
        I would recommend a NEU 1521 or a Castle mamba 2200 kv?

You really need to stay in the 6S-8S area on that hull if you expect anything from it. 4s and a 2200KV in that boat is too hot for any larger props.

You will need some blade for that one like M545/450, etc.

Find a 36/74mm or XL in the 11-12T area and use the Etti.

          Keep it light when building.

If you want a reliable 60+ mph then I suggest a Neu 1527/1Y on 6S. I run this in my 34" SprintCat and am very happy with it. A 1521 or Mamba is too small IMO. The 50mm prop is probably too small too. I suggest a big ESC for this boat, I run a Schulze 32-170 but a Hydra 180HV or 240HV should work.

BTW, 130F is not too hot for a BL motor after a decent run. More than 150F is too hot for most motors, although Neu says 180 is okay, and Scorpion says well over 200F is fine.

I set mine up when a Lehner was the only way to go, I run mine with a 2250. Today, I would set it up like Jay suggested and run the 1527.

For sure a 1527 1Y on 6s is much better, the motor is super (i have it in my sprintcat too). The good thing with this hull is that it can go very nicely even with small props 640-642. When proping up (depending also on the strut height) the stern becomes unstable, this is what I noticed in the Maritimo with over 45 mm props.

What many folks do wrong is to use a small rudder on these narrow German cats. This causes the "instability" mentioned above, and it also hurts the hull's turning ability. Run as long a rudder as you can - you will like it.

Sorry to hijack but would a smallish rudder cause the boat to be extremly loose when turning? My Intruder seems to break loose when turning?

Good idea about the rudder, my MM has a longer one and turns much better. But I think that H&M suggests this size of rudder, probably a longer one is needed.
Just checked the H&M site, for these cats (Drifter,Maritimo) they propose a rudder with 89mm (3.5") active rudder length (130mm total length 5.1"), shorter than the speedmaster 21 but wider.

Would my etti 150A esc run a Neu 1527/1Y ?

In my sprintcat it didn't, but the drifter is lighter. In addition, I wouldn't recommend running the ETTI on 6s. As you see above Fluid recommends HV180-240 or 32.170, I run an MGM 25035 with this setup. The ETTI is good for smaller boats on 4-5s, I don't think it can make the 36" drifter run at 60mph

                            Thanks Disar

I will leave the ETTI out

                            so new esc and motor

HV180 and Neu 1527/1Y any good deals about?

To turn the drifter in to a fast straight line drag boat instead of a 60mph boat would you use the same Neu motor or a different one? just thinking were I am gona run this thing at 60mph my lakes not that big
So maybe balls out power runs setup may be better
