I agree. This is beer conversation. We don't want or need to turn this into bar fighting.
It seems that everyone here has valid opinions and are just expressing them. No harm in that. I have learned alot from both sides. Just food for thought as far as I'm concerned.Government Moto:

Sorry, that's the price you pay when labeling people morons, you are held to a higher standard.
I know. It makes me sound petty, and I guess it is. Oh well.Don't get me startedComment

First, I am over 435 miles south of San Francisco. Being from California according to your profile, I am surprised you got that badly confused. By the way, that is about the distance from Washington, D.C. to Boston MA. I sincerely doubt that Steven would like being confused with somebody from DC.
Secondly, Orange County, where I live, is as conservative as SF is liberal.
But then again, any idiot would know that. But maybe not. And so I do not get slammed, this is in response to being likened to idiots in SF.Don't get me startedComment

Well, not to be snarky, but you did call him a moron. So allow me to point out that you mean "which" not "witch". One indicates a choice among many while the other is a mythical figure in fairy tales.

Just my 2 cents here .... just a few years ago say 35 or so I remember when charlie was tied by the feet & flown around from the underside of a USMC chopper along the top of the trees!
Every once in awhile the chopper would dip!
Oh sorry that didn't happen! Oh & if it did I truly don't care after all Charlie was trying to kill me!We did it with a Bang!

That's part of the problem when dealing with suspected terrorists. Do they deserve the same treatment as POW's? Although I don't agree with torturing them, I don't believe treating them with kindness and respect will change their minds about whether we all deserve to die.
My family comes from Germany and the US. My grandfather and his three brothers fought for the german army in WWII. My grandfather died somewhere in Russia and was never found. The others were captured. The only one who survived was transferred to a US POW camp. He credits his survival to the kind and decent treatment he received from his captors. To this day, he has nothing but kind words and respect for his captors and the country where he was held.
I don't think this kind of treatment will change the mind of any terrorists, but decent treatment of captives isn't always a bad thing.Comment

He lasted less than 20 seconds knowing that it could stop at any time. Imagine the stress a real captive is undergoing......Steven Vaccaro

Hitchens can be a pompous a$$ at times, but I give him high marks for doing this to see what it really is like. There have been a few others. None agree with Hannity and O'Reilly that it is not torture.
Over and over again these "enhanced interrogation tactics" have been shown to yield unreliable information.
One classic example that happened in Arizona some years ago involved a multiple murder in west Phoenix at a Thai temple. The local Sheriff (Big Bad Joe) somehow locked in on a guy from Tucson. Despite having his image on video at this work place and initial protestations of innocence, they arrested the guy. They held him for several days in a hotel in Tucson. Deprived him a sleep, food, etc. And subjected him to relentless interrogation. Guess what? He confessed. So did three others they arrested with him.
It took a few months of this poor slob sitting in jail before they tracked down the real killer. A 17 year old honor student who thought the temple was like in Indiana Jones.
Oops. Sorry. Their defense was that he confessed!! They ignored the video at his work place and he finally broke under the pressure of being sleep deprived. I cannot imagine what people will confess to when being water boarded.

Bill I agree that it is torture.
I dont believe that we should be torturing our own citizens. But what is your suggestion for getting information from a high raking captive? Do you deny the fact that this type of interrogation has stopped acts on US soil? If so, what is the value you place on one US citizen? Unfortunately for the USA there is a group of people that hate us no matter what we do. Shaking their hand isnt going to make it better.Steven Vaccaro
