The Goodwood Festival of Speed is one event that I have to attend, as it is probably the best format of all to celebrate auto racing, and yes open wheel racing is very dangerous.

That will have been at Goodwood Revival which is a track race day where all the cars a classics and the drivers and spectators all go in period costumes for a fantastic atmosphere and some beautiful multi million pound cars having the tyres and door handles driven off them. The Festival of Speed is a hillclimb time trial like Pikes Peak but much shorter, and as well as the usual hillclimb cars there are F1 cars through the ages, rally cars, sports and supercars through the ages, and often some as yet unreleased sportscars. I live about 30 minutes from Goodwood, and although the festival of speed is an awesome event, I prefer the revival.

Good point Paul, both events are really neat. I just think that it was a great foresight of Lord March to have the vision to do the Festival event at his estate. The Goodwood race track's Revival is as you mention, a hell of a lot of fun and to view the wonderful race cars of that era. !961 was when I saw my first motor race at the old Charterhall Circuit in Scotland and that was also an old airfield....that was the era of many great British F1 racers!

Being only 36, I don't remember the 60s so the revival is like being in a classic film for me. The first race I went to was at Silverstone in about '90, and the 2 tracks I have been on are Bedford and Brands Hatch, all old airfields. The war was a terrible thing obviously, but it left an abundance of airfields behind it, many of which were turned into race tracks, a legacy that still makes this tiny island the greatest country in the world for motorsport expertise.

Arguably the best driver that ever lived came from your era and your side of the wall, I wish I could have seen the late great Jim Clark racing.

I did, and he was my hero. My handle on one racing website is Ecurie Ecosse with this picture. This was taken after his first win at Spa
