Hey buddy I rooted my s4 and it was really easy. I like to use geo hots methods. Check YouTube. You need to know the software version. Here's one link for it.

putting a genaric version of the operating system on it opens up features and usually updates the phone to newer software that tmobile (my carrier) wont let you do.
