    Computer problem

Is this an obscure problem or has anybody else experienced this: When online, my computer will sometimes lock up. The cursor will not move and the key board will also fail to function. If this occurs during download, it will stop downloading. This only happens when online. I'm using a wireless router and my tower is an older unit with XP. The hard drive has been replaced and any and all viruses and malware have been removed but still have the problem.
The only thing I can do is manually shut down the computer and restart it. This is an intermittent problem; some days it will be a PITA and other days it will operate fine.
    What's going on?

See if you have a scorpion folder under program files. It caused a similar problem on mine.

Clear your internet cache. Remove unused files from your temp folder. Set a static swap file. Make sure your prefetch folder is not too large. Defrag your hard drive. Try running a different browser. Make sure your power settings are set to desktop. Chrome will sometimes freeze your computer during an update. Google tips and tweaks for XP. There are so many things you can do.

If its only online it could be an issue with your browser, What browser are you using? Does the same thing happen if you use another browser?

No point clearing cache as he has stated he bought another HDD and its the same issue.

Also, if your connected to the internet but not browsing, does it lock up or does it work fine?

          1. I'm not using Chrome
          2. I use Fire Fox for my main browser.
          3. I had Scorpion Calc installed....it has now been removed.
4.It will still lock up even when not browsing, that is I could be on this page as of now and it might lock up. It will lock up when downloading a video.
          5. I am using a wireless router. Another computer is connected directly into one of the thru- ports and my computer has the wireless set up.
          6. Could the problem be originating within the router? It was not an expensive one and it was not a major brand.
          7. I will defrag the hard drive. I also use CClean . I don't believe there is anything wrong with the cache either as the problem began just wfter I get the computer back from repair. The tech could not find any problem but he had for only one day.
Thanks for all your input guys. Sooner or later I may stumble on the cause.

The problem is not your router. It sounds like conflicts between programs or programs that were once installed on your computer.

            I would install CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/promo/cclean...FXPNOgod31wAqA) and perform a clean-up and registry scan/repair.

            Good luck.

Make sure that only one antivirus/ malware and firewall programs are installed.

Reference your item 7....problem only arose after repair.....What was the original issue? ....technician found no problem....take it back to the tech and state that you have this issue after he inspected it and are the two issues related?
